Umbrosine

Properties

Material Characteristics

Velvet-black chunks that absorb light and illumination entirely, leaving only the suggestion of depth. Umbrosine is the darkest material known and has a magical conductivity rating of 7 out of 10.

Geology & Geography

Found deep within the Veilspire, a subterranean catacomb located beneath most of Galadhor, Umbrosine is known for its vantablack hue and light-absorbing nature. The mines operate in total darkness to prevent worker disorientation from the ore’s light-draining aura.

History & Usage

Discovery

Umbrosine was discovered early in the year 7588 when a Blackaxel airship crashed after on-board navigation systems unexpectedly malfunctioned. Unfortunately none of the crew were located before they perished due to the nearby Umbrosine absorbing their emergency light signals.

Everyday use

Umbrosine has a wide array of uses spanning from material coatings and paints, coverings for silent armors, light‑eating baffles and is nefariously sought out by criminals for stealth tools.

Refinement

Umbrosine cannot be smelted in natural-fire forges due to its light-absorbing properties and is typically pressed in vacuum compression chambers or friction forges. Due to this unique process the metal is most commonly sold in puck form which can be chipped, flaked or powdered for use in various applications.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

Powdered Umbrosine that is subjected to extreme heat beyond its melting point creates shadow soot, a critical component in many autonomous machines such as B-YU units.

Reusability & Recycling

Umbrosine is readily recyclable if scratched off of or otherwise removed from the surface it was applied to. Reapplication in thin coats can fill in scratches, dents and other blemishes with minimal loss.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Umbrosine is sold exclusively by exotic ore merchants but is commonly traded on the black market at exorbitant prices.

Law & Regulation

Umbrosine excavation requires extensive vetting of employees who, along with the companies who employ them are required to register with Kiqueo's Department of Ecological and Rare-komanan Phenomenon (D.E.R.P.) whose main purpose is to monitor and track certain materials, components and phenomenon.
