Sundorite
Properties
Material Characteristics
Raw Sundorite is pure white with thin black marbling running throughout and is frequently mistaken as marble. Once processed, the material takes on a white and gold marble that naturally shapes into cubes that glow in daylight. All Sundorite radiate a gentle warmth, illuminating surroundings even without flame and cannot be darkened or diminished except by magical means. Has a magical conductivity rating of 8 out of 10.
Geology & Geography
Sundorite is mined from the mountains of Aetherglow Rise and Aetherglow Crescents, typically at higher elevations though some material has been extracted from near-surface level caves.
History & Usage
Discovery
Aetherglow was first discovered in 6405 when the Cathedral Oculus was burned by notorious serial arsonist Darin Holt. During the holy site's cleanup and reconstruction efforts, architects noticed strange glowing cubes in the basement before quickly realizing the structure lacked a basement.
Everyday use
Sundorite, also referred to by clergy members as Solstones was typically reserved for use in churches and temples of the Vox Ultima. Ancient uses considered the metal perfect radiant sollight but modern uses see Sundorite used in garb, solar charging stations, wards and can be found in every Vox Mausoleum.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Sundorite has been linked to Solariax as a holy metal since its discovery and is still revered for its unmistakable resemblance to sollight. While ancient rituals and traditions no longer make common use of the metal, its application throughout religious sites has easily become a legitimacy indicator, significantly reducing fraud around the churches of Beaumont.
Refinement
Sundorite prefers to be forged in darkness, typically done under darkcloth and always forms into perfect cubes. Smiths can easily identify when the metal is ready for tempering when the black marbling ribbons turn a brilliant gold. Sanctified oil is used for quenching but is considered a ritual rather than a necessity.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
The transition from black to gold ribbons within the metal creates a single byproduct known as sanctified ash, a staple in all consecration circles and banishment glyphs.
