Battle of the Obsidian Spine

The Battle of the Obsidian Spine is a myth that has emerged from a recently-discovered archaeological site high in the Gonnak Mountains above Numonnuszkal, by the scholar Gorlami Boulderson. The digsite consists of a small, flat clearing tucked between the mountains, wherein six black, obsidian stone pillars, reach skyward from the earth. Archaeologists have not yet uncovered the meaning of this site, especially with lead researcher Gorlami having left his post at the Academy not long after discovering this site. The mystery surrounding this location and the origin of the obsidian spires has sparked a great deal of controversy amongst both scholars and commoners alike.

Summary

Most believe that a battle took place here several dozen life-cycles ago between a prehistoric civilization and a great beast. Hardly anything has been uncovered to suggest what this great beast may have been, however several bone fragments have been discovered, buried in nearly the exact center of the six pillars. Surrounding the battle site, a host of primitive weapon and armor fragments have been dug up, with engravings that are entirely unfamiliar to the current inhabitants of the realm, thus suggesting that a completely unrelated civilization fought this battle, possibly even one from the unexplored Wild Lands to the west of the mountains. Some proponents of this myth believe that the powerful foe was either a frost or storm giant, on account of the large size of some of the uncovered bones, and their apparent likeness to the shapes of the human anatomy. However, most scholars warn that this theory is unlikely, by account of there being no verified encounters with giants anywhere throughout written history. Most scholars who have seen the site for themselves argue that it is instead much more likely that this was an ancient sacrificial grounds, and the pile of random bones in the center may have resulted from many distinct offerings given over a period of time, rather than one single battle.
