Alignment

Alignment is a Tanadszomo festival which occurs whenever Kōna passes closest to the holy planet of Tened Kanat. Usually, this occurs every two to three years, although the distance at which the two planets pass each other is highly variable, depending on how their (elliptical) orbits line up. Astronomers have learned to track the patterns of Tened Kanat to predict when the next Alignment festival will be, and it is a time of grand celebration among the people of the Tanadszomo Mountains who follow the religion of Tsit Id Mon.

History

The myth of Tened Kanat has long been important to the Tanadszomo people, but in recent centuries, the science of astronomy has developed to the point where scientists can accurately predict the orbit of the neighboring celestial body to within a few hours, and this technological revelation has birthed the Alignment festival into existence, whereby the religious can commemorate their momentary closeness to what they perceive as the holiest of places. The first Alignment occurred around 240 years ago in the city of Dedz Moton, and involved feasts, dancing, ceremonial battles, and competitions in activities such as flying, archery, and beast-taming. Such traditions have continued into the present, and as the festival has spread across the entirety of the Tenedzum, many communities have found ways to put their own twist on the festival, incorporating local cuisine, arts, and musical styles, as well as prayer, martial arts, and meditations in some areas.

Execution

Execution of Alignment varies widely amongst Tanadszomo tribes, although the most common practice is a flying competition, wherein competitors attempt to fly as high as possible, towards the world of Tened Kanat. Most often these flights are undertaken by trained griffon riders, although occasionally magical means of flight such as spells and enchantments are utilized as well. Aside from the flying competitions, many communities band together to construct towers of great heights, which claw at the heavens in attempts to be closer to divinity - because of this practice, many of the mountains of the Tenedzum are topped with grand spires, which are most often completely unused, although some are used as watchtowers or as part of larger networks of alert beacons. Also common are cooking competitions, where families compete to make either the best-tasting dishes or simply the most of a certain item of food (e.g. dumplings or spring rolls).

Observance

Alignment is observed by all the faithful of Tsit Id Mon, whenever the holy planet is closest to Kōna. The festival typically lasts for one day, although some communities have extended the celebrations to lengths of several days, or even up to a week.
