Mathan Clan
The Mathan Clan is the current ruling clan in the Kingdom of Tirglas and has kept that title for many generations.
The current ruler of the clan is Queen Fiona, who has several children. Her eldest, and heir, being Crown Prince Gordon.
Titles
Titles amongst the royal clan are straightforward. The ruler is named Queen or King, with their spouse being titled Prince/Princess Consort. Both children and grandchildren are titled Prince or Princess regardless of where they stand in succession. The sole exception is the living eldest, who is always the heir and is titled thusly with Crowned Prince/Princess.Succession
If a Tirglasian chieftain is wise, they will have many children during their reign and the same stands for the royal clan. This is due to the tumultuous union of clans and how cross-clan disputes have caused multiple civil upheavals over the centuries. The Mathan Clan was once almost wiped out during a revolt many generations ago, save for a single boy who escaped the slaughter of his kin. Succession of the ruling title doesn't hinge on gender, with daughters and sons having equal claim to the throne in descending order of birth. If the heirs have children of their own before a ruling parent passes (and many are encouraged to do so at a young age), those children step into the line directly behind their parents. This means an uncle or aunt who was third in line could easily find themselves seventh or even tenth. Only when the crown passes to the heir are they no longer considered as spares.Rumours
As with any ruling family, there are rumours circulating about the royal clan.- Servants murmur that the queen once had a second daughter, who was taken away to the cloister as a young girl due to being a spellster. The queen adamantly claims she has but the one daughter.
- It is said that the queen wept more for the loss of her elder grandchildren (one lost at sea, the other mauled by a bear) than for the children-in-law who suffered the same fate.
- There was a great deal of speculation behind the reason the queen's second son, Prince Hamish, has yet to marry. There have been several claims of the prince being spotted in pub backrooms, servicing sailors who happened to be passing through. However, any chance of validating these claims proves elusive as the supposed men are nowhere to be found.
- Since Prince Hamish's union contest, it has been confirmed that the prince preferred the company of men.
- The queen claims Prince Hamish was slain by the Udynean ambassador not long after the contest was concluded, yet there have been numerous reports of the duo spotted heading south hours prior. Conversely, those who still deal with the Udynea Empire claim the empire's vris Mhanek married the prince.
