The Council of Duchies

The Council of Duchies is something of a rising star on the the northern first world’s stage, despite it's extremely recent establishment, the Council as become an institution. The Council consists of a fluctuating number of confederated lands (called duchies for simplicity) covering much of the western side of Ansowwi. The area part of the Council is called 'the council' land for simplicity.   The Council is governed by the eponymous council, an oligarchic gathering of every lord of a member state of the Council, it’s rare for every lord to be present at the council, they’re more often than not busy governing their homeduchy and will usually send envoys to make decisions in their stead, usually their sons, wives or nephews. The Council of Duchies is decentralized, being more of a federation than a single unified entity, where a each duke’s opinion is -at least in theory- considered with equal weight.   Most duchies are hereditary monarchies, but there are some exceptions. Many of the larger, more sparsely populated duchies along the mountain border are governed stratocratically, meaning that one’s social and military rank are one in the same. Similarly, some of the duchies on the Louno border are Noble Republics, where a council of highborn nobles and merchants elect a leader form among themselves to rule..   Their economy is one of the most diverse in the western first world, due to the diverse nature of the duchies that make up the council, the economy is varied based on region mostly, trade and fishing on the coast, agriculture in the heartlands, and mining in the south bordering the mountains. One of the most classic arguments for the Council’s existence is this exact diverse economy. Much of the Council's wealth comes from metal unearthed and forged in the mountainous regions to the south being shipped to the north where it is traded or refined further.

Structure

The organization of Council land is deliberately obtuse and specific, designed to meet the traditions and differing forms of government of all the many duchies.   The lands currently holding seats on the council are:
  1. Duchy of Swarzross
  2. Duchy of Nutrasita
  3. Duchy of Reitross
  4. Commissariat of Suuno
  5. Duchy of Ewigheit
  6. Duchy of Selilin
  7. Free City of Jassa
  8. County of Lussig
  9. Duchy of Arumotioss
  10. Lordship of Kuntiloss
  11. Duchy of Ussmelen
  12. Commissariat of Lanna
  13. Commissariat of Karitas
  14. Bishopric of Johholm
  15. Free City of Inpfholm
  16. Republic of Seigodd
  17. Republic of Mistbella
  18. Free City of Wihross

Territories

Council territory is relatively diverse for Ansowwi, typically divided into two regions; The north, which consists of miles of low, flat land, it is the main point of contact to the Council as it's coast consists of many wealthy trade cities. The south, meanwhile, is covered in huge stretches of hills and mountains. The two halves live in a mutually beneficial relationship, as the mineral-rich south ships material north to be refined and traded.

Military

The Council's army has been a point of major contention since the Council's creation. The phrase 'The Council's Army' itself is misleading, as military is decentralized, each duchy having its own army, commanded on behalf of the duchy's lord. Most of the army comes from the militaristically-minded southern Stratocracies.
