NER D Class 0-6-0T

The North Etorean Railway (NER) D Class was a class of 0-6-0T tank engines. Fifty-three were built, though only thirty-nine would see service with the ENR though some saw service elsewhere. The last member of the D Class was withdrawn in 1961.

The class was designed by Matthew Raine, and were constructed between 1875 and 1881 all at Gainsthorpe Locomotive Works; they were used on passenger sevices, initially around Redwick and Knightsbury on commuter trains though they would later be displaced as more powerful locomotives were built. While on commuter services, they mainly worked out of Chapelswood and Rockingham in Redwick and Morely in Knightsbury with the class also seeing service on the City Widened Line.

After they were displaced from their original duties,   all given enclosed cabs in 1897, new boilers and smokeboxes fitted between 1908 and 1922, three fitted with belpaire fireboxes by ENR in 1925. six had condensing equipment for use on the city widened line.   For the full list of locomotives click here.
