John Lavinge

John Robert Paton Lavinge

John Lavinge (8th July 1834 - 17th September 1911) was an Etorean railway engineer, responsible for the design of locomotives for the Eastern Counties Railway between 1887 and 1895.   Lavinge was born in Locksley, Etorea in 1834 to parents Arthur and Elizabeth Lavinge. He was the 3rd oldest of seven siblings. Having shown an interest in mechanical engineering since he was young, he became an pupil of Francis Ayers at the Ambion & Birchouses Railway's works at Birchouses at age seventeen. He joined the drawing office in 1857 at the end of his training. He was the Chief Draughtsman for one year before the A&BR was amalgimated with several other railways into the Eastern Counties Railway.   When the ECR was formed, Lavinge remained as Chief Draughtsman under Robert Atkinson until 1877 when he was appoined Head of the Carriage and Wagon Department". He kept this post through Lawrence Godfrey's tenure as Locomotive CME before succeding him as Chief Mechanical Engineer after Godfrey's Resignment in April 1887. Many of his locomotive designs lasted well into the 20th century in either Etorean National Railway use or as stock sold into industrial use. During his time as CME he used his familie's wealth to open an orphanage aswell as build better housing for his workers. In 1890 his nephew Robert studied under him at Birchouses Locomotive works.   Lavinge was dismissed as Locomotive CME in 1895 due to what was believed to be "Drunkardness and Sleeping during work hours". This was later found out to be narcolepsey. He died on 17th September 1911 from a Narcolepsey induced stroke at age 77.   Locomotive Designs:
