ENR Type O

The ENR Type O was the designation given to the standard designs of six - wheeled passenger coach produced between primarily between 1924 and 1936 to replace older wooden bodied stock of the same size (six wheeled stock) as well as four wheeled stock.   Before 1924, the ENR was still using old wooden bodied four and six wheeled coaches on many branchline, local and commuter trains with some dating back to the 1880s. Draughts were already being put foreward for replacements to these older coaches when, in March 1923, a collision occured between a local passenger train and a stopping goods near Marsden, Ayleshire where 57 people were killed and 16 others injured. An inquest launched to find the cause of the accident found that a third of the casualties were caused through fire related complications.
