ECR New E Class 0-6-0T

The Eastern Counties Railway New E Class was a class of fourty-two 0-6-0T tank engines for the ECR by Edward Rollins and built between 1889 and 1894. All locomotives passed into ownership of the Etorean National Railways in 1919 and were renumbered in the 4XXXX - 4XXXX series.

When Edward Rollins was appointed Locomotive Superintendant of the Eastern Counties Railway in 1888, there were few 0-6-0 tank engines present, most shunting and short-haul work was undertaken by obsolete classes of tender engines (such as the №1 Class, № 18 Class and №114) and displaced tank engines that had been replaced on suburban passenger workings (the №60 Class and the №99 Class) with the only locomotives designed for shunting being ECR №s 26 & 27 and 0-6-0ST №93.

This lack of led to the development of the New E Class which, while intended to take over as the primary class of shunter for the ECR, also proved their worth on passenger trains. This led to them being fitted with a modified version of the condensing gear that had been fitted to some mebers of the New F Class.
