The Kingdom of Hawaii is overthrown by missionaries from the Kingdom of America. A republic is declared, and a request for annexation is sent to the American Congress. However, Congress is divided, and King Edward II adamently refuses to authorize the annexation. Queen Lili'uokalani requests restoration of her throne. While Edward is sympathetic, he dies from pneumonia before he is able to. Having no heirs, his brother becomes King Henry II, who is disinterested in the idea, and thus Hawaii maintained a government in exile.
