Pierre I
King Pierre I
Jean-Pierre Christophe, known as Pierre I, was King of Haiti. He was the son of King Henri II and Clemencia Antonia Bobadilla. His parents marriage, and by extension his birth, was meant to bridge between the French and Spanish populations of Hispaniola. As a consequence, he was the first Haitian king to speak both French and Spanish from childhood. As a child, Pierre sustained an injury to his neck that left him with a stutter for the rest of his life.
As a teen, his father sent him to America for military training. He graduated from the American Royal Military Academy at the age of 22 to return to Haiti to serve as a military officer. He proved effective, implementing reforms to the military that he had learned in America, increasing the capabilities of the Haitian military.
