Blue Fairies

Done in collaboration with Blue Fairy 74.

The Blue Fairies, officially called Unit 74, were a unit of nurses in the German army who served the wounded during the World War. Created by Kaiser Wilhelm III, the unit recieved its nickname from the blue uniforms that they wore to denote them differently than active combatants.

In these dark hours, our place is not in the safety of our homeland, but at the side of those brave sons who bleed for our freedom and our honor. Every bandage we apply and every comforting word we speak is our service to the imperial fatherland. May our Lord in Heaven and Emperor guide our hands, so that we might retain the strength to serve those who give everything for us—for victory and for a proud future for our country.

Recruitment

The Blue Fairies are recruited from across the Empire, many of whom have husbands serving in the military.

History

While many men were sent to fight against Great Britain and Italy on the front lines, many German women felt the need to serve as well. Though it was believed women should be barred from front line and combat service, the German High Command allowed them to form a corps of nurses in order to tend to the wounded. Thus, Unit 74 was created, designated under the medical wing of the German army.

Despite initial fervor to serve their country, many of the women grew discontent with the fighting after the combat and bloodshed they had witnessed. Many within the unit began to show anti-war sentiments, calling for an end to the conflict. Much of the women grew to be widows.

We came here to heal wounds, but all we see is humanity itself rotting away. There is no more morphine to stifle the cries of the dying, and hardly any bread to feed the living—we wrap misery in filthy paper bandages while the fatherland cries out for more victims. This war is not a song of heroism; it is an endless sludge of pus, blood, and hunger that devours the youth of entire nations. Stop the killing at last; there is no honor in dying, only the bitter silence of mass graves.

The anti-war sentiments grew until the unit became a large voice for ending the war. Many believed this undermined the German war effort, with some propagandists stating it was a British subterfuge. Though this agitated the High Command, with some even calling for their dissolution, the unit's service rendered them invaluable. As a result, the German Bundestag was forced to hear the voices and be committed to concessions.
