The Good Knight's Rest
In the shadow of Castle Whiteport sits a large, three story cozy looking cobbled stone building, overgrown with jasmine on one side, nestled in an open square of the city across from the well. A few small tables and chairs sit scattered outside on the porch where a few patrons sit drinking under a colorful awning, surrounded by colorful baskets of fragrant flowers planted along the windowsills framing the frosted glass. The smell of cooking food hangs in the air, while the faint grey smoke wafts upwards from the chimney. Towards the back of the building is a large stable, in which a few horses are housed, while the hitching post outside seems similarly occupied. A colorful wooden sign hangs from a post above the door, depicting a smiling knight on horseback, under which the sign reads "The Good Knight's Rest."
Purpose / Function
The Good Knight's Rest prides itself on being one of Whiteport's most comfortable inns at an affordable price. The proprietor, Niner Horhik, enjoys meeting travelers from around the world and spends most of his time hanging around the Inn's restaurant on the first floor, or outside with patrons on the covered in porch. The Good Knights Rest offers shelter to any traveler willing to pay, or who can provide a good enough story to earn their stay for the night, and Nine runs the Inn under the Motto "This shall be a place of welcome to all who come in peace."
Horhik founded the inn shortly after the Terror looking to create a prosperous business in the city and expand from his small restaurant which he ran previously. In the time since then, Horhik's Inn has become incredibly profitable, and Horhik now no longer needs to work the Inn much himself (aside from handing out room keys and serving as a host to patrons, a job he enjoys tremendously), instead paying a few employees to run the kitchen, bar, stables, and clean and prepare the rooms.
Alterations
The Good Knight's Rest has undergone very few alterations in its thirty years of operations. Over the years, the ivy planted on the building's northeastern wall has become overgrown, covering not only the cobbled stone wall, but also growing over the frosted glass and the planter boxes under those windows. The roof looks like it has been repeatedly repaired, while two windowpanes appear to have been smashed and recently replaced.
Architecture
The Good Knight's Rest is a comfortable place to stay within Whiteport. The large, multicolored panes of frosted glass are worked into intricate wrought iron windows. Fresh flowers and herbs grow in the boxes on the windowsills on all sides aside from the northeastern wall, over which ivy has begun to grow. Most walls are cobbledstone, while some are painted over with white plaster. Three chimneys rise out of the top of the building. On the South Eastern wall, overlooking Castle Whiteport, the river, and harbor, a colorful awning covers an outdoor seating area, in which thick wooden boards are placed over barrels to form tables.
History
Niner Horhik started building the Good Knight's Rest thirty years ago, living out a lifelong dream of owning his own business after saving for years working as a chef. The Good Knight's Rest has been seen by many as a communal gathering point for the city of Whiteport, and is generally seen as neutral ground in the disputes between the Blues, the Golds, and the Reds. Niner prides himself on the peaceful and orderly reputation his Inn has, and has little tolerance for violence or roughhousing, a rule which placed him on the bad side of the Crimsons, although he has enough accomplished former patrons and friends to protect him, including a few retired adventurers whom he is fond of reminding patrons about. In recent years, the Good Knight's Rest has been damaged by Reds in recent brawls and riots between them and the other factions, but Niner attempts to hold the Crimsons responsible and keeps them distinct from the rest of the Reds.
Tourism
The Good Knight's Rest is a common resting point for well-off tourists and visitors to Whiteport, while its rates are reasonable enough to not be exclusionary to those of less liquid assets. Moreover, Niner Horhik is a well meaning host and is always happy to welcome a visitor who cannot afford to pay, provided they can share a good story, and if space is scarce, will always allow someone to stay overnight in the stables "provided you don't disturb the horses." The most common patrons of the Good Knight's Rest include well off foreign merchants, sailors, foreign emissaries and visitors, pilgrims, and, Niner's personal favorites, the adventurers.
