Thalassographer
"The sea is not just a body of water; it is a living memory, a vast, endless library of forgotten stories. Our job, as Thalassographers, is to listen to those whispers and preserve what others have left behind. To understand the sea, you must first respect it."
Scholars, Explorers & Adventurers
In the heart of the Aerithia Archipelago, on the shores of Alyrath, lies the prestigious W.H.A.L.E. institute that trains the Thalassographers; an elite group of explorers, scholars, and adventurers dedicated to uncovering the secrets of the deep. While their roots trace back to the rough world of pirates and treasure hunters, the Thalassographers have evolved into a complex and respected profession in Kena'an with a deep connection to both the physical and mystical realms of the sea.
Origins & Evolution
Initially focused on exploration and treasure hunting, the Thalassographers’ role evolved as the Empire invested in further academic research, advanced diving techniques, and magical disciplines. What was once a dangerous and illicit occupation soon became one of the most prestigious careers in the Empire, blending rigorous academic study with a high level of physical and magical training.
The profession of Thalassographers began centuries ago as a group of treasure hunters- many with pirate origins- who navigated the ocean's mysteries in search of wealth. As the Keraian Empire extended its influence over the Aerithia Archipelago, they recognized the unique skills of these individuals and enlisted their help to establish connections with the newly acquired lands. Over time, the Empire realized the true value of the Thalassographers’ deep knowledge- particularly their understanding of the Thalasyr, whose ancient wisdom and otherworldly presence were key to uncover the stories hidden into the depths of the sea. Some decades later, the Western Hydrographic Academy of Lore and Exploration (WHALE) was founded in Port Vengeance, the capital city of Alyrath, to train the next generations of Thalassographers.
Today, Thalassographers are tasked with a wide array of duties that encompass both academic and exploratory pursuits. These individuals specialize in understanding the ocean's geography, the aquatic life that inhabits its depths, and the lost histories embedded within the sea’s forgotten ruins. Their work goes beyond simply charting underwater terrain or discovering sunken treasure; they are the Empire's foremost explorers of the deep.
Ranks of Thalassographers
Once trained, Thalassographers can choose a specific focus. Some concentrate on the history and archaeology of the sea, seeking to uncover the secrets of sunken civilizations and shipwrecks. Others become spellcasters, learning to harness the magic of the sea to protect themselves and unlock deeper, ancient mysteries. The most physically adept are trained for combat and exploration, specializing in underwater survival and tactical operations. However, the WHALE places the greatest prestige on historians and magical practitioners, with historians in particular considered the most vital members of any expedition.
Waveblades: Combat Specialists
Recollectionists: Historians
Seaweavers: Magic Specialists
The Seaweavers are the spellcasters of the Thalassographers, wielding powerful magic to aid in underwater exploration, communication with marine life, and the manipulation of water itself. In addition to their magical prowess, Seaweavers are also highly knowledgeable in ocean life and its delicate balance. They understand the intricate relationships between marine species and ecosystems, using their knowledge to help expeditions navigate the deep with respect for its inhabitants. Seaweavers are crucial in helping expeditions survive in the hostile environment of the deep sea. They cast spells that allow the group to breathe underwater and communicate peacefully with sea creatures. By deciphering the cryptic signs and ancient knowledge of the Thalasyr, they assist in uncovering lost secrets that lie beneath the waves.
"The ocean is a living, breathing entity with its own rhythms and inhabitants. Every creature, from the smallest coral to the deepest leviathan, plays a role in maintaining the harmony of the sea. As Thalassographers, it is our duty to study these creatures, understand their place in the ecosystem, and protect the delicate balance that has existed for millennia."
Responsibilities & Expeditions
Thalassographers conduct both official and private expeditions, exploring shipwrecks, ancient ruins, and other underwater mysteries. Official expeditions, funded by the Empire, often follow clues to significant discoveries, such as lost artifacts, magical secrets, or rare treasures. Smaller, training-focused expeditions are organized by the academy, which also accepts privately funded missions under strict conditions. These private ventures must have a defined target, and any knowledge or treasures gathered are shared with the academy, with 20% of any recovered wealth going toward its funding. While Thalassographers are expected to uphold the values of duty and respect during their expeditions, there is also a strong sense of camaraderie within the profession. The academy instills a code of trust, where expedition members rely on each other’s expertise and skills. However, those who break the code of conduct risk losing their status, and many former Thalassographers, once cast out, turn to independent ventures, offering their services to treasure seekers or even pirates.
The WHALE
The WHALE (Western Hydrographic Academy of Lore and Exploration) is the prestigious institution where the Keraian Empire trains its Thalassographers. Located in Port Vengeance on Alyrath Island, WHALE serves as the heart of Thalassographer education, blending rigorous academic study with hands-on exploration and magical techniques. The academy’s mission is not only to uncover the ocean's forgotten past but also to preserve the delicate balance between the physical and mystical realms of the sea. Aspiring Thalassographers receive specialized training in aquatic geography, marine life, history, and magic, preparing them for one of three specializations: The Recollectionists, the Seaweavers or the Waveblades.
Interactions with the Thalasyr
One of the most unique aspects of a Thalassographer’s role is their connection to the Thalasyr, the ethereal and mystical beings that are believed to be the guardians of the sea’s memory. Most Thalassographers respect the Thalasyr as sacred entities, while some view them with a more practical eye- recognizing them as another sentient species with its own customs rather than revering them.
To truly understand the Thalasyr's knowledge, Thalassographers usually seek out Recollection Stones. These stones are highly coveted and can reveal glimpses of lost battles, forgotten treasures, or even the voices of sailors long since perished. The most advanced expeditions can delve deeper into the realm of the Thalasyr, engaging in direct communication with these beings. It is said that those who are worthy may receive visions or even firsthand memories from the depths, but only a few Thalassographers have the skills to achieve this.

I think, that your first attempt on a profession is a huge success. I like the fact that they are not loved by everyone. The way you right the name of the institute makes me think that WHALE is the short form for something. Is that so or at the capital letters just a coincidence?
Thank you so much, Leijona! WHALE stands for Western Hydrographic Academy of Lore and Exploration. I might need to have this added in the side section about the WHALE itself and not inside the main body of the text as I did.
