Treasures of the Dream
The reefs of Miraela’s Dream are more than beauty; they are bounty, mystery, and danger. Each coral holds a story, each sponge a secret. Some are harvested with ritualistic care, others ripped out in haste by smugglers and sea-thieves. From sacred relics to commodities of power, the corals of Miraela’s Dream have become treasures for alchemists, artists, farmers, and criminals alike. Each variety holds secrets the surface can barely comprehend, but still hungers to harvest..
Nightsong
The rarest and most fabled of Miraela’s offerings. These deep indigo corals shimmer like a star-dappled night sky, glowing faintly. Used in sacred relics, noble jewelry, and high alchemy, Nightsong coral is ground into powder for dream-draughts that treat insomnia. In higher concentrations, the same powder induces a state of living death, including paralysis, catatonia, or worse. It is a favorite of both healers and assassins, depending on the dose.
Blood Coral
These corals are named for their deep crimson hue. When crushed and worked into soil, they vastly improve fertility and crop resilience. The powder also has alchemical applications tied to vitality and regeneration, but overuse can sometimes be fatal. Rural farming barons and sea-bound kingdoms pay handsomely for even the smallest fragments. Some believe that Blood Corals are nourished by more than minerals since they thrive best where many have drowned.
Caged Crown
These corals form ornate, crown-like structures of ivory. As they die, they harden and shrink. Inside, they trap a singular object: a perfectly formed pearl. The hue of the pearl - ranging from pale silver to bruised violet - reveals both the coral’s age and whether it died naturally or was harvested prematurely.
Velvet Chord
These long, flowing corals resemble bouquets of deep violet threads. When underwater, they “sing” in soft harmonic tones, altered by the tides. Myth says they echo Miraela’s voice, guiding the souls of the drowned back to shore. Crafters harvest them to create musical instruments of unmatched resonance. Their extraction releases a potent hallucinogen that is highly addictive. Smugglers call the drug “Dreamgasp”.
"There are colors here that would make a rainbow weep."
“I don’t care if the sea curses me. One caged crown's pearl and I’ll never work again.”
Sorrowsponges
Found only in the most hidden crevices of the reef, these rare sponges are semi-sentient, pulsing gently to the rhythm of nearby emotions. They are harvested - often cruelly - for use in medicine, dreamcatching, and even cosmetics. A properly preserved Sorrowsponge can quell nightmares, soothe emotional torment, or stabilize fractured minds. Their extraction, however, is dangerous: they wither in harsh light, and the deeper one dives to find them, the greater the chance of being lost to the currents.
Trade & Demand
Legal Trade
Under the auspices of the W.H.A.L.E. (Western Hydrographic Academy of Lore and Exploration), limited harvesting is allowed under strict ecological and spiritual guidelines. Licensed Thalassographers and sea-clerics perform extractions only during specific dates throughout the year, offering respect to the reef and recording every removal.
The export is limited, but legal coral pigments, alchemical dusts, and Velvet Chord instruments fetch extravagant prices among nobles, scholars, and apothecaries across Kena’an. Nightsong fragments, even as dust, are sold only under supervision and rarely leave the ports they arrive in.
Black Markets
Pirates, smugglers, and unscrupulous divers brave the Dream without sanction. They take recklessly, often damaging entire colonies just to retrieve a single Caged Crown or Sorrowsponges. These goods then vanish into the shadow networks of the port cities before travel inland.
In places like Port Vengeance or the Bazaar of Hollow Eyes in Serpent's Maw, unlicensed Nightsong powder is sold in silken pouches with no warnings. Dreamgasp made from Velvet Chords, is the number one narcotic. Even counterfeit coral, painted and passed off as the real thing, is a booming trade.
Scarcity & Consequence
The reef does not replenish quickly. Overharvesting has already left barren patches; ghost gardens where life once danced. The Thalasyr have issued warnings: should the Dream be stripped beyond healing, the wrath of the sea will not be poetic. It will be cataclysmic.
Still, Miraela’s Dream remains a paradox: a sacred sanctuary, a treasure trove, and a slow-burning tragedy unfolding beneath the waves.
That's funny, I wanted to write about a coral garden for the garden challenge, but unfortunately I didn't get around to it. It's beautiful, and the pictures are simply fantastic.
I love how we still think aline <3 I am really glad you liked this!
