Geography

(general geographical information)

Agriculture

Considering the general lack of land space available due to the towers, Keltrex had no shortage of fresh produce available to it prior to the opening of the gates. Utilizing advanced methods of vertical and hydroponic gardens they grew their own vegetables and fruits in tower floors designed to allow in optimal sunlight while using recycled water. Other less tower heavy isle areas typically dominated by The Ivy Syndicate produced other natural products that were not able to be grown in these kinds of gardens. Livestock for meat and dairy products are kept in adjacent floors or on enviable free-range land spaces available. It is not un-typical for some of the indoor kept livestock to come from genetically modified heritages, though this was kept to minimal levels to prevent long term issues it could cause to the consumers.   Because of the standards of produce that Keltrex has in order to maintain health of the general populace, their import of products from the main lands is done with strict regulations. Sub-par product is returned with ended contracts if ever discovered. This also means that produce from Keltrex is an enviable resource to the outside world for its lack of taint and generally beneficial attributes to the consumer. However, it is difficult to establish an export with the isles as production is focused for local needs with little excess for the world beyond the gates.

Trade

The primary export of the isles is technology. Keltrex produces components for computers, medical equipment, arms systems, and more. The items they produce are on a tier that the other continents have yet to be able to reproduce to a satisfactory level, powering major systems and networks and bringing in heavy revenue. In exchange the continents provide resources and information that was previously unavailable on the isles.   Keltrex is also the only known location for the safe installation and upkeep of cybernetics and augments that Outriders use. The only downside being that the technology does not function past a certain varied distance from an active gate. Leading to the main population of Outriders staying within Keltrex in order to retain the use of their upgraded functions.

Government & Law

The isles are an oddity when it comes to their standing with other nations as well as their form of law enforcement. After some long and overly complicated debates, Keltrex was established as its own country, though they simply kept the singular name for themselves as they had always been. It has no formal overseeing government, but they did choose to elect officials to act as ambassadors for particular purposes to ensure good trade and international relations.   There is no central form of government over the isles, rather it ranges from tower sets or even from tower to tower what is enforced beyond what they call “Original Laws.” These "Original Laws" are rather simple, relying on basic moral standards and leaving quite a lot up to interpretation. Towers, sets of floors, or tower groups often have their own law enforcement forces that are usually privately owned and managed which means that there are often rather tedious politics of enforcing abided “laws” between the varied areas and their individual forces should perpetrators escape from one to the other.    Note: The Deck Of Detectives Agency often acts as a liaison between these sections or towers as a neutral law enforcing entity with tower systems they have established a connection with. This is something unique to them since they are not privately owned by any tower system.

Society Structure

The people of Keltrex have based their society primarily on how high up the towers one can call their home. This has impacted the state of the levels heavily as well as towers have gained levels over the centuries, making the lowest levels dangerous and ill maintained while the higher levels find themselves full of the newest facets and affluent individuals. This hierarchy is retained even in the structures below sea level populated primarily by the local water evolved races of the isles who are more revered the closer to the surface they dwell, and deeper levels being seen as where the laborers and seedier individuals' dwell.   Ultimately, the higher you are in the towers, the higher the class you exist within. The only thing that can define you any other way in Keltrex is your technical skill, or Outrider status. And even then....why would an Outrider exist within the lower levels of the city anyway? If you do, something must be wrong with you.   See city section descriptions in the side bar~

Transportation:

Sky bridges and elevators connect levels and buildings. Bridges built of high strength materials connect towers, each dedicated to their own form of transport that does not overlap. This means that there are bridges for
  • Pedestrian Traffic - Any by foot or non-vehicle means of transportation
  • Private Transportation - Personal vehicles of transportation that require roadways
  • Public Transportation - This includes methods such as busses, taxis, and even separate railways used by the general populace
  • Commercial - Commercial vehicles used to transport goods have their own bridgeways between towers and travel in efficient safe routes
There are similarly the same divides in the elevators that are scattered throughout the buildings, many reaching only certain sets of floors, and being divided up for private and public uses as well as whether they are for the transportation of people or goods.

City Sections: Society Structure

Ground Zero
Ground Zero is what most call the ground level area that makes up the slums of Keltrex. These buildings and locations sit between the lowest floors of the sky scrapers that make up the rest of the city, and the barely untainted fringes of The Voidlands at their highest border. Here live those who, for whatever reason cannot find their way upwards, the rejects who did not bond well with augments and cybernetics beyond the common civilian access ones, and the scraps of dead or dying old machines.
Mech-A
Mech-A is the first non-refuse level of the city. In these levels reside or work the less glamorous but highly skilled and needed workers of mechanical inclination. The prized ring of progress caked in the eternal scent of grease, metal, and sparks is heavily divided between the factions in terms of where they are safe to go without stepping on the toes of the others. There is a never ending array of mechanics who can fix just about anything made of metal and wire here, and even to some extent certain augments and cybernetics that are heavier on the mechanical side, like those who have replaced parts of their body with full gear.
The Districts
In the districts one can find the average areas of commerce and living populated by the middle class. Malls, stores, the first few housing floors are primarily filled with apartment style living but are sprinkled with some of what Keltrex considers houses. This is the start of where regular jobs exist for less intensive and mechanical labor, but also where one can find the places that can install the most basic of augments and cybernetics common to the populace that aid in everyday life.
Island View
The Island View is where the upper middle class live. One can find access to slightly better technologies and centers for their installation. This is also where higher end non-augmentation based technologies can be found and are developed. White collar crime is known to take place behind the lovely scenes, and no one desires to address it if they can help it. It keeps the upper floor economy going afterall~
Sky Tops
Those that are able to reside in the Sky Tops are commonly referred to as "Penthousers." Up in the highest reaches of the towers, accessible only to residents and their guests, can be found the highest quality goods and the safest spaces to live. Luxury and access to all the best there is on the island and from mainland exports are found here, in the place that can be seen from the furthest reaches of the isle.
