Personal history
Born in the sewer warren of clan Roughfoot as the youngest of her litter, the child who would go on to earn the name of Illwit was not expected to survive long. The sewers were unforgiving, and many young ones died before they could even walk. Born in the wet season, most of her litter was met with this cruel fate while Illwit managed to cling to life with the aid of the foreign traveler known as Svill.
From a young age Illwit idolized Svill and would often listen to her tales of the surface and of far away lands. This upbringing instilled a great sense of wanderlust within Illwit, much to the chagrin of her fellows and the elders within clan Roughfoot. Due to her abnormal desires to leave the warren and explore the world, along with her willingness to venture near the gateways to the Topworld she was often viewed with mistrust and disdain by the other members of the warren.
Life in the sewers of Portempest was a rough existence, with little food and constant dangers children were often expected to fend for themselves. Having been born under unfortunate circumstances Illwit spent her childhood at a disadvantage, being among the youngest and smallest within the warren she fought hard for every scrap of food and clothing, and was often quick to attack others if the opportunity presented itself. By the age of 7 she had acquired a reputation as a headstrong fighter, and was routinely challenging much older members of the warren over food and shelter. With a handmade knife fashioned from a shard of glass affixed to a broken branch she would charge at opponents, slashing away at whatever was within reach until her opponent relented or, more often, incapacitated her. Her headlong charge into battle would often also result in her suffering lacerations to her face and arms, in some cases caused by her own wild swings.
Her short temper, aggressive demeanor and desire to leave the warren came to a head on a warm summers eve when she was exploring the sewer beneath a small bakery and noticed a crack within the walls of the sewers leading to the bakery’s basement. Without hesitation she split off from her scouting party and squeezed into the bakery. After exploring the basement and sampling some of the various cooking supplies stored within she attempted to follow the smell of fresh baked goods up the stairwell and into the shop. Through great fortune she entered into a shop that was already closed up, with only the baker remaining. Upon seeing the young, filth covered, girl the baker assumed her to be a street orphan and attempted to force her out of his shop. To his surprise the child, when faced with a man nearly three times her size, not only refused to back down, but drew her knife and charged, screaming at the man. The advantage of surprise allowed the young one to get in a few good stabs before the baker’s kick sent her flying into a nearby table. Dazed and barely able to stand she grabbed her knife and attempted to charge again, but was restrained by the other members of her scouting party, who succeeded in using a cloud of flour to cover their escape. Following her display of recklessness the elders of the clan awarded her with the name Illwit.
Now banned from serving as a scout, Illwit spent the next few years searching for a way to return to the surface safely, or at least get closer to the outside world. When the opportunity arose to act as a guard near the Bigwater entrance to the Roughfoot repertory Illwit jumped on the opportunity. Given her behavior in the past it was expected that she would not survive for long, as many viewed the assignment of guard as a guaranteed way to be ambushed by other clans, kidnapped by morally dubious nobles, or end up as prey for the various predators that stalked the sewers.
Her luck changed when she encountered her first trespassers. A band of travelers who had come to the sewers on the behest of a mad sorcerer, seeking an ancient trinket which had come into the clan’s possession. When offered the chance to join the travelers Illwit accepted with little hesitation, being given the name Daisy by the party to signify her emergence from the dirt of the sewers to the world above.
