Winterbane
Winterbane is the name given to the great castle overlooking Camalin and the Wodenwood. This fortress is one of the oldest structures in the area and has housed the royal family of Briana for generations.
Purpose / Function
Winterbane was originally built with the purpose of guarding the lords of conquered Brianey in mind, but now serves to defend the ruling family of Briana. Its walls house the rulers of Briana, and thus must be comparable to breaking through a mountain with your fist. It is the impenetrable fortress that safeguards Briana’s royalty and is by extension a symbol of the people’s pride and strength. If Winterbane falls, Briana’s hope and determination may likely fall with it.
Design
Each of its floors are divided into three separate chambers, the largest in the north and smaller floors in the south.
Alterations
After the older ruling class of Briana fell, the fortress fell to disuse as the Briane scattered. After Camalin was repopulated, Winterbane was repaired with wooden attachments where in the past there had been stone. While the walls have been effectively fully repaired, the towers have been topped off by wood structures and the keep is almost entirely wooden, with a stone foundation and lower walls.
Architecture
Winterbane's lower walls are mostly solid stone, with wood being used in places where the old stones have fallen off. This is only until enough of the stone known as Foch, or Snowstone, can be gathered to repair the castle, but until then the outer walls and lower rooms are solidly made of the gleaming white material. The towers and upper levels of the keep are made of sturdy Skywood, being far more durable than most wooden buildings.
The keep is an 89 by 94-foot structure that rises four stories into the air. It is composed of a basement floor, an entrance level, and two upper floors. The entrance is above ground and is accessed via a wooden staircase that can be removed in case of attack. Latrines have been added, having been built into the walls since it’s reuse.
