The Republic of Slek

The youngest of all nations on Joia by far, the Republic of Slek has been the subject of a lot of interest, both for its present, but also for its past. The lands that would become Slek were once ruled by a truly ancient red dragon, Jesmenda the Tyrant, for over millennia, with his rule first starting shortly after the Emperor's Fall. It would naturally take quite a bit longer before he had conquered the dragonborn who lived there as well as killed all other dragons, chromatic and metallic, in the area, with some surviving only by fleeing to the rest of Joia. It is unsure why his expansions ended where they did, or at the very least slowed considerably, but many have theorized that the ancestral land of all dragons held something truly powerful within it, and when he had conquered it, he became less interested in his borders and the expansion thereof. He held these lands, ruling the dragonborn as an eternal tyrant, growing older until he eventually met his match at the hands of the Golden, the most famous adventuring group on Joia, as well as a nationwide rebellion. It is said that he had nearly found and was about to use the old power of the dragons when he was killed, but that is hard to prove.   Though only 20 years ago, there has been quite a lot of radical change in the country ever since. The most prominent of these is their representative democracy, as well as their change in culture. The democracy stems from the fact that the dragonborn would never again accept a single ruler, but the more interesting part is the culture. Simply put, the dragonborn of Slek has done all they can to reject the nature of dragons. All dragonborn bear within them the greed and avarice of true dragons, though less extreme, and this has become a source of great shame for the dragonborn. There have been made great efforts to suppress these instincts in all citizens, their natural ambition to climb and take for no other reason than the fact that they want to. There has also been made some effort to distance themself from the language of dragons, draconic. In fact, almost no dragonborn under 20 are fluent in draconic anymore and it is only used scarcely by those who still know it. If this suppression of their nature is entirely healthy is yet to be seen, but it is a least true that Slek is doing all that it can to never return to their former state, even if it still haunts them. Quite literally in fact, as the ghost of Jesmenda still exists, forever angry, but unable to do anything about it as he can't actually hurt anyone in his current form.

Structure

The Dragonlands are ruled by a council, led by the democratically elected prime minister and ministers including the minister of agriculture, defense, and industry. These minor ministers are in charge of the houses associated with their title, such as the minister of defense being in charge of the house of defense. These houses are arranged in multiple smaller circles within their larger field of expertise.

Culture

The most important part of Slek's culture is its relationship with true dragons. Specifically, their shame over their similarities to them. This is most prominent in the intense suppression of their innate greed and avarice, a trait which is obvious in true dragons, but which also exists in part within all dragonborn. This can also be seen to a lesser extent in their diplomacy. Slek has famously tried all they can to be on the best of terms with every country that they can, and they've had quite the success in this. They've famously become surprisingly friendly with the League, likely given that they don't share a border, though they've yet to pierce the famous indifference of Thenniden and Shemlar simply cannot help itself when it comes to antagonizing other countries.

Public Agenda

The public agenda of Slek is to improve the lives of all Sleks while making sure that another tyrant will never rise again.

History

Arguably the most important event in Slek's history was the Scarlet Rebellion led by Impalirros "Bellow" Belnaar. This of course was the rebellion that overthrew the tyrant Jesmenda with the help of the Golden. Impalirros would go on to serve as the first Prime Minister of Slek for eight years whereafter he would retire to the countryside. His successor, Vildar "Fortunate" Nysqwen, served only four years as people believed that they were to fall for the corruption of Jesmenda, and finally Yemtiak "Bedrazer" Urivys has served as Prime Minister for the past eight years with the election for a new ruler soon to take place.

Demography and Population

Slek is one of the smaller nations in both land area and population, with the most predominant race being dragonborn. Of these, red dragonborn are by far the most common. The second-largest population is elves, with most staying near the larger cities, this trend is generally true for all other races as well.

Military

Though there is a defensive force within Slek, it has rarely seen use given their one border is with Lichan who is famous for never starting wars, even if they do quickly end them. This has admittedly resulted in a bit of a banditry problem, especially from those who fought in the rebellion have little to use their skills on if they aren't interested in becoming guards.

Technological Level

The general technological level of Slek is somewhat higher than most other nations as they have been some of the most accepting of the factories that produce both goods and common magic items.

Religion

Given that religion was strictly banned under the Tyranny, religion has never truly been a part of Slek's culture. Several priests have tried to get the populace invested in the Creed of the Major Gods, but there has been little success, likely given that the prospect of worshipping a higher being isn't too appealing to Slek as a whole.

Foreign Relations

Slek has often been described as being almost excessively pleasant at times, especially in the case of foreign affairs. Having tried, and often succeed, in making good with the entirety of Joia, likely as to establish themself as a serious player. They do after all have quite a bit of catching up to do.
