For those who wander, not all is lost when they can no longer find their way. The stars, flowing water, moss on trees, and even small devices that fit in pockets can help find a new direction when one is lost. With the right tools and the right knowledge, no situation cannot be surpassed, cannot be moved through to a path that is well-worn.
Simple compasses that point the way north have existed for millennia, simple items and magnets that lead a singular direction. A tried and true item for all wanderers, it was thought that there was no need to ever improve upon something that was so simple, but worked so well. But with enough experimentation, magic can better nearly anything. With a charm, some spoken magic, a rune carved in the correct spot, a simple compass can become so much more, something that leads those who are lost to a specific destination.
Wayfinder Compasses are a rather new invention, something that became more necessary as the events of the
Eldritch War erased paths and landmarks that had given travelers directions for thousands of years. People were dislocated, removed from their homeland as those places were turned to nothing, and heavily traveled paths became fissures that were impassible. As the world changed beyond recognition in many places, the need for a compass with a bit of magical direction became a necessity that had never truly been thought out.
Wayfinder Compasses are enchanted items that can be attuned to a specific location as chosen by the user so as to always point towards that location. These items are set to always be active, but will begin to pulse a variety of colors depending on how close one is to the specified location. A red light means the user is moving away from the location, while a green light means the user is almost to the location.
These compasses can be modified to point to a type of location instead of a specific location. The most common of these modifications is to have the compass attuned to inns run by the
Dagger Guild so that
Adventurers can find a safe place along their travels, even if they do not know where the next
Dagger Guild inn is. Other types of locations can also be sources of fresh water, dens of particular creatures, or veins of certain ores.
Compasses have existed for millennia, but the Wayfinder Compass was not created until the
Eldritch War drove a number of people from their homelands. It was the
Minotaurs who first developed the magic for these compasses, a small charm that would lead them to stores of their history that had been lost when the
Mystic Jungle was turned into one of the
Deadzones. Eventually, the same magic would help them travel elsewhere in the world, going to places that these people had never seen maps for.
Over time, as the
Minotaurs spread into the world, the need for Wayfinder Compasses became greater, causing various magic academies and organizations such as
Fire & Gold, Inc. to create their own versions. Some of these replicas were more popular than others, with the
Fire & Gold, Inc. production being the most sought after with its polished
brass finish, quick-change runes to change the attuned location, and a variety of other small features.
What a useful item, being able to point towards things such as fresh water. Like a magical sat nav!
