Skeletal Pines

Death of the Deeproot Pine

The trees of the Timbers of the Furnace are considered an oddity even to the Dwarves that live beneath the forest, but none more so than the Skeletal Pines. Early research has proven that these white bone-like trees are little more than the dead remains of the once vibrant Deeproot Pines, but even the most well-versed of Scholars have little understanding of how one transitions to the other.

Dead trees are often brittle and are suitable for little more than kindling, but the Skeletal Pines retain the hearty nature of their predecessors, making it difficult to fell or even take a single branch from the tree. Tests done by the Dwarves have determined this nearly petrified wood to be as strong as some Steel, a feat that is quite impressive.

The Skeletal Pine, also known as the Bone Pine, is a dead and petrified tree that was once one of the vibrant Deeproot Pines that cover the entirety of the Timbers of the Furnace. Known for their bone-like visage and strong wood, these trees are most commonly found in the Dead Sea of the Timbers and are said to have some cursed properties about them.

Basic Information

Growth Rate & Stages

Deeproot Pine
Deeproot Pines grow tall and dense in the forest known as the Timbers of the Furnace. An ever-changing landscape of trees, these trees never seem to wither or die, often keeping their needles in pristine condition no matter the weather or amount of harvest.
Skeletal Pines have one of the most interesting growth cycles of most trees in Isekai due to these trees beginning as one species and becoming another entirely. Once a Deeproot Pine, these trees have undergone a process similar to petrification that changes the hardness of the tree as well as grants them other properties.   Deeproot Pines can live for millennia if they are not harvested by the Dwarves or suffer from some disease. These trees grow extremely quickly, replacing those that have been removed in a matter of weeks so that the forest remains full. With such an interesting cycle of growth, it could be assumed that the Deeproot Pines cannot die as other trees can.   Scholars have confirmed that Skeletal Pines are the dead husks of Deeproot Pines, but no cohesive theory on how the trees died has been formed. Over millennia of observation, no one has witnessed the death or even harm of a Deeproot Pine other than the harvest that the Dwarves complete rather frequently. Even this process requires the use of special axes to pierce the bark and hardy wood of the Deeproot Pines and it is believed that these trees do not truly die until they are placed in the heat of Dwarven forges.   Skeletal Pines seem to appear nearly as if by magic. Over the course of a night, a Deeproot Pine can be transformed from the vibrant green of life to the white bone-like visage of death. This transformation hardens the wood, a process similar to petrification, and makes it impossible to cut, even with blades made of Adamantite.   Little else is known about the life cycles of the Skeletal Pines as these trees seem to be both living and dead, presenting signs of growth over time and repairing any injuries to the wood over the course of a few evenings. Scholars have determined there is little explanation for the trees than the deep magic of the world that sometimes works in mysterious ways.

Ecology and Habitats

While Deeproot Pines cover most of the Timbers of the Furnace, the Skeletal Pines are not common throughout. Stands of these bone-like trees are often found in the area known as the Dead Sea of the Timbers or other deep areas of the forest that no living creature has touched in millennia.   It is also believed that Skeletal Pines are common in the higher elevations of the Great Furnaces but these areas are difficult to reach due to the odd magic of the forest that blankets the mountain range. If one sees a glimpse of a Skeletal Pine, it is often assumed that the forest will turn them away or allow them closer to never return.
Skeletal Pines
Skeletal Pines are nothing more than the dead remains of the Deeproot Pines of the Timbers of the Furnace, but their skeletal visage is most commonly associated with the Dead Sea of the Timbers. Here, the conditions would kill even the hardiest of trees, leaving nothing more than empty white branches behind.

Dead Sea of the Timbers

The Dead Sea of the Timbers is the most common location to find Skeletal Pines even though the living Deeproot Pine is common throughout the Timbers of the Furnace. Known as the most desolate area of the forest, nothing else lives in this area other than the Skeletal Pines, causing most to believe that at one point this area was somewhat safe.

The forest is home to little life, its inhospitable soils running away most vegetation and animal life, but even those that stray into the Timbers ignore the burning soils of the Dead Sea.
