Butterflies
Fluttering Insects
Wings of various colors flutter through the sunlight as delicate creatures look for their next source of pollen. Shades of orange, yellow, blue, purple, all colors of the rainbow move and twist on puffs of air as they move from one flower to another, sticky pollen covering their antennae. These moving colors are the mark of summer in the north as the colored wings move with the seasons, finding the warmer shores of the Southern Continent bursting with sustenance, while the Northern Continent is caught in cold winds. Only migration keeps delicate wings from shredding in the wind or freezing in the cold.
Butterflies are found scattered throughout Isekai, but they often prefer areas with warmer climates and plenty of flowers. These insects vary in size and coloration, often using these traits to their advantage to keep them safe during pollination or migration. Being some of the largest insects in the world, other than megafauna, Butterflies are beloved as pollinators, but also as simple insects that rarely cause harm to anything they interact with.
It is common to cross paths with Butterflies, especially in the warmer months when flowers and various plants bloom and require pollination. These insects are unbothered, landing on animals and people alike, drawn by pollen caught in fur or the bright colors worn by various people. Because of their simple and sweet natures, these delicate insects are often seen as a sign of hope, an instance of light in a world that is often otherwise plagued by darkness.
Basic Information
Winged Camouflage
Some Butterflies utilize coloring to hide from their predators. This type of Butterfly looks like the eyes of an Owl when positioned in a certain way.
Anatomy
Butterflies range widely in size, with the smallest having wingspans of less than an inch while the largest have wingspans of upwards of twelve inches. Even with massive wingspans, the weight of these insects is insignificant, so much so that one would not even notice one landing on their shoulder. Of all insects, the size of Butterflies varies the greatest. These insects also vary widely in color, including using camouflage, mimicry, and aposematism to hide from predators. Butterflies can be almost any color and have wide-ranging patterns that set them apart from other creatures. Some types of butterflies will migrate over long distances when the weather begins to turn. Butterflies that often inhabit areas near the Neither Tundra and Either Tundra will move towards the Zóni during the colder periods of the year before returning to their normal range as the weather warms.Genetics and Reproduction
Butterflies go through a great change during their lifetimes. Adult Butterflies lay their eggs in foliage that will eventually feed their offspring, caterpillars, for the early part of their lives. These caterpillars will live in this same foliage, growing rapidly, until they reach full maturity. Once the caterpillars are fully developed, they will form a chrysalis where they will remain for a number of days, reforming their bodies. During this time, the caterpillars turn into little more than mush as their bodies rearrange into what will become a Butterfly. When the Butterfly has reached maturity in the chrysalis, it emerges, fully formed with wings and a new body.Additional Information
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Most Butterflies prefer to live in areas with warmer climates, including the more temperate and tropical locations of the world, but some will range further into areas that have wide temperature changes throughout the year. On the Northern Continent, Butterflies are found as far north as the southern border of the Neither Tundra while on the Southern Continentthey do not range as far south as the Either Tundra.
The Zóni are considered the largest habitats of Butterflies in the world as their climate stays mostly the same throughout the year. Some of the largest Butterflies in the world inhabit the forests and jungles that define this band of islands, but some of the most colorful are the ones that migrate throughout the year.
Monarch Butterfly
Monarch Butterflies are one of many Butterflies that live throughout the world. These Butterflies are one of the few that migrate throughout the year to follow the warm weather and blooming flowers.
Yay, butterflies, I love butterflies!
