Dragonians

The Dragonians of Calteria are renowned for their relentless ambitions, their strong will, their prowess in battle and their close connection to dragons. Dragonians are feared and distrusted by many other ethnicities within the Iromar Isles due to the wars of the Great Rebellion (see the History of the Iromar Isles) where tyrannical dragons roamed the lands and great battles between metallic and chromatic armies were fought. A common myth among the people of Storvia is that the type of scale of a dragonian is telling of their alignment (good/evil), however scholars have determined that this characterization have only applied in a few recorded instances and should therefore not be considered accurate.

Origins and Religion

Legends say that the First Dragons were created deep within the fires of Mount Calteria and that the first Dragonians were hatched by Evael (God of Creation according to the Dragonians) in order to protect and serve the First Dragons. Soon the Dragonian Empire had taken a foothold on the Iromar Isles and spread onto every island. The Dragons ruled as emperors, kings, dukes and lords while the dragonians farmed the lands, made great works of art and fought for their overlords.    However, many dragons were so greedy and prideful that the Empire was doomed to fall. The Great Rebellion was fought primarily between those of Chrome and those of Metal. Great dragonian armies fought against each other and decimated the Isles of Iromar. This also gave birth to the Kobold race, which was born by Chromatic dragons as part of their plans to alter entire dragonian clans to suit their greed. The conflict only ended after 230 years of intense fighting when Dragon Queen Ultheera finished her Reconquest of Calteria, the homeland of the old Dragonian Empire, by killing Arugash the Bonebreaker.   The Great Rebellion also unleashed a schism in the Cult of Dragons which split it into two parts: the Cult of Chromatic and the Cult of Metallic. Most dragonian belong to the Cult of Metallic as they worship the The Enlightened and fiercely try to outmaneuver the Cult of Chromatic.   In the Dragonian religion, mighty dragons typically ascend to become gods when they perish and the living are therefore considered something in-between royalty and deity. Considered by the Cult of Dragons as their most holiest site, Mount Calteria is both the palace of Dragon Queen Ultheera as well as the hatchery for new dragon wyrmlings and the final resting place for dragons who manage to survive into their final twilight years (1200+). Mount Calteria is surrounded by the city of Myarthor which have always been considered a jewel of the Dragonians.   Temples associated with the Cult of Dragons can be found across Iromar although many are nothing more than ruins. Some say that powerful reliques are still kept hidden in these ruins. Wizards, sorcerers and other scholars can often be found searching for clues to these old ruins in the hope that they might uncover forgotten knowledge or some powerful weapon that might change the fate of empires.

Clans and Hierarchies

Family is an unfamiliar concept for most dragonians since their parents typically only mate once, and then split up after the birth of the newborn, by which the gender of the newborn determines which parent will be the guardian of the child. Instead of familiar ties, the clan is the single most important institution in dragonian society. Each clan has their own set of traditions, allegiances and responsibilities. Dragonian clans are typically formed around their allegiance to a specific dragon or the successive line of a particular dragon. Similarly, as the dragon grows older, wiser and stronger, so does the clan expand and thrive. When a dragon death eventually occurs then the clan often finds itself without purpose and typically split into new clans that choose a successor either based on being related to the original dragon or because the successor displays the same virtues and ideals as its predecessor. Some of the strongest and largest dragonian clans have served some of the most recognized and well-known dragons that have ever been. The largest clan is currently the Golden Scales, which serves Dragon Queen Ultheera.   The clans themselves are organised by a council of elders, who are chosen on merit of their contributions either directly to the clan or to the dragon associated with the clan. Typically, the clan is also divided into sections of professions or purpose such as Warfare, Metalworking, Mining, Agriculture, Sorcery and so on. Each dragonian clan is also typically associated with a specific location such as Myarthor or another dragonian settlement. However, each settlement is typically home to many dragonian clans and each clan are typically spread out over many settlements. Due to the strong personal allegiance to their clan, most dragonians form their own communities within settlements where they can govern themselves according to their own traditions.

The Order of the Dragon

Although fairly uncommon, some dragonians decide to live a life without a clan for one reason or another. These dragonians typically become members of the Order of the Dragon - a knightly order who travels across the Iromar Isles in search of lost dragonian artifacts, treasures and knowledge. Being member of the Order of the Dragon typically means a life of adventuring and questing for a purposeful new life. Some members of the Order eventually finds a new purpose as mercenaries or as serving new lords in foreign kingdoms. The most common members of the Order are paladins sworn to an Oath of Devotion.
The author would like to note that the Dragonians are inspired by Dragonborn from the Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition.

Born of dragons, as their name proclaims, the dragonians walk proudly through a world that greets them with fearful incomprehension. Shaped by draconic gods or the dragons themselves, dragonians originally hatched from dragon eggs as a unique race, combining the best attributes of dragons and humanoids. Some dragonians are faithful servants to true dragons, others form the ranks of soldiers in great wars, and still others find themselves adrift, with no clear calling in life.

Proud Dragon Kin

Dragonians look very much like dragons standing erect in humanoid form, though they lack wings or a tail. The first dragonians had scales of vibrant hues matching the colors of their dragon kin, but generations of interbreeding have created a more uniform appearance. Their small, fine scales are usually brass or bronze in color, sometimes ranging to scarlet, rust, gold, or copper-green. They are tall and strongly built, often standing close to 6½ feet tall and weighing 300 pounds or more. Their hands and feet are strong, talonlike claws with three fingers and a thumb on each hand.   The blood of a particular type of dragon runs very strong through some dragonian clans. These dragonians often boast scales that more closely match those of their dragon ancestor—bright red, green, blue, or white, lustrous black, or gleaming metallic gold, silver, brass, copper, or bronze.

Self-Sufficient Clans

To any dragonian, the clan is more important than life itself. Dragonians owe their devotion and respect to their clan above all else, even the gods. Each dragonian's conduct reflects on the honor of his or her clan, and bringing dishonor to the clan can result in expulsion and exile. Each dragonian knows his or her station and duties within the clan, and honor demands maintaining the bounds of that position.   A continual drive for self-improvement reflects the self-sufficiency of the race as a whole. Dragonian value skill and excellence in all endeavors. They hate to fail, and they push themselves to extreme efforts before they give up on something. A dragonian holds mastery of a particular skill as a lifetime goal. Members of other races who share the same commitment find it easy to earn the respect of a dragonian.   Though all dragonian strive to be self-sufficient, they recognize that help is sometimes needed in difficult situations. But the best source for such help is the clan, and when a clan needs help, it turns to another dragonian clan before seeking aid from other races—or even from the gods.

Dragonian Names

Dragonians have personal names given at birth, but they put their clan names first as a mark of honor. A childhood name or nickname is often used among clutchmates as a descriptive term or a term of endearment. Dragonian Traits

Your draconic heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with other dragonians.

Age

Young dragonians grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.

Alignment

Dragonians tend to extremes, making a conscious choice for one side or the other in the cosmic war between good and evil.

Dragon Ancestry

You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table (see below). Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Breath Weapon

You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.
