Sol System

in Human Systems

The Sol system, also known as the Home system and Earth's (star) system, is an inhabited planetary system in the Milkyway Galaxy. It is located within a stellar cluster known as Sector-1. The Sol system is the capital system of the United Nations Federation, and New USSR.   The Sol System consists of nine planets:

Mercury - Due to the proximity Mercury is to the sun, it has no colony/outpost either on the planet’s surface or in orbit. Though there is an old research station in orbit from an attempt that was made by the New USSR in 2257.   Venus – is probably best known for being the first candidate for early terraforming efforts. However, first attempts failed to live up to expectations and the planet reverted back to its original state. It wasn’t until after the colonization of New Earth in 2108, that a second attempt was made. Though this too failed, but with more of an effect in the right direction. In 2347, another attempt was made to terraforming Sol’s second planetary body. Amazingly, this time the terraforming stuck and colonization of the newly formed planet could begin at last. Presently, there are now twenty-seven cities with a combined population of 12,389,900 people making Venus the fifth most populated world in Sol.   Earth – The birth place of humanity as well as the central command/governmental center for the UNF, New USSR and Arabic Republic. Though much of the landmass has been torn apart from continuous wars and conflict.   Mars – or Sol IV, is an independent commonwealth colony world of the United Nations Federation as well as the second largest in the Sol System with an estimated population of 1,578,921,094 residents. The first colony was established in 2038 by the Mars Colonial Project. Mars is also the first planet with unknown ‘alien’ ruins that were discovered around 2051 some fifty miles from the city of Xouis. Discovery of the ruins forever changed humanity’s future, though no one has yet to translate the writings found there.   Jupitar – Has five ground colonies on Europa, Io, Amalthea, Ganymede and Callisto, and three orbital research colonies continuously studying Jupiter’s Great Storm ‘Spot’.   Saturn – Saturn has only one colony on its largest moon, Titan, as well as several space docks used for final construction and airlock testing of battleships, frigates, destroyers, etc.   Neptune – Currently, this icy blue gas giant is unable to support any kind of life. Though, there are several Defense Stations in orbit that act as an early warning system for possible hostile ships entering Sol from the outer edge. Neptune also has several more resource stations that collect hydrogen from its atmosphere for use as a fuel component in the EHIIC (electric hydrogen-injected internal combustion) engine. There is also a plan by the Office of Planetary Development of the UNF to attempt a terraforming project of Neptune by removing most of the hydrogen and helium-rich atmosphere to expose the core and create a new atmosphere using the oxygen from the water collected, nitrogen from the ammonia, and carbon dioxide using carbon from methane. It is a lengthy process, and the icy planet will likely not be habitable for at least two or three centuries.   Uranus – Aside from a few harvest satellites in orbit taking in the water and hydrogen from the atmosphere, there is little interest of the gas giant. However, much like Neptune, Uranus 'might' be a candidate for a long-term terraforming endeavor.   Pluto – Has two colonies, one controlled by the UNF and one by the New USSR. It was established for its rich mineral deposits of iron and dry ice.

History

Outside of Earth, Humanity first began to colonize the Sol System as early as the mid to late-2030s with the first-ever colony being founded on Mars in 2038 just five years before the whole planet was terraformed. Today, Mars is the second-largest habitable planet with a population of nearly 1.5 billion people.   By the early 2050s, sometime after the formation of the United Nations Federation, humanity founded the colonies on the moons of Jupiter after they were terraformed, of course. Saturn’s moon, Titan, came sometime around the mid-2060s and is considered to be the third-largest colony after Mars.   For the next fifteen or twenty years, colonization efforts were minimal with only a handful of orbital bases and research stations being organized around some of the moons of Uranus and Neptune. By the late 2080s to the early 2090s that both the UNF and New USSR set up mining outposts on Pluto for its rich deposits of dry ice and iron. Though, because of frigid temperatures, Pluto cannot be a full-fledged colony.   It wasn’t till the late 2090s that humanity began to venture out beyond Sol.
