Champion

Class Description

"Chosen by one of the Gods, you're sworn to do their bidding. Skilled in the art of combat, you don't fiddle around too much with "rituals" and "rites". You don't send your deity's enemies to them, your deity sends you directly at their enemies." -Class description in The World of Idoria TTRPG

Lore

The Deities have many tools at their disposal for intervening in mortal affairs: from Arcanists, beings capable of rewriting time and reorganizing the landscape, to Priests, people who preach the good word of their deity, to the Champions, individuals who act as defenders of the deity's ideals as well as a weapon for dealing with more minute 'problems'.

Champions are chosen at, or very close to, birth by their deity to become their spear and shield. This is done through The Divine Ritual of Champions, a sacred ritual in which a temple seeks, summons, or appoints someone as the newest champion of their deity. Typically only one Champion exists per deity at a time, though there have been a few accounts of there being two or even three working together at the same time! Champions exist to push the agenda of their deity when negotiations and peace have failed. Armed with a javelin, flail, and a shield decorated with the deity's symbol, Champions are trained since birth- or as close to it as possible- to be a weapon, dishing out righteous justice by violent means.

A Champion being born is often seen as a bad omen by governing bodies and heretics alike, as it means someone has sorely messed up to the point of a deity calling upon violent measures. They are not just some vigilante claiming the name of their deity, they, in most cases, are an avatar of that deity, acting directly for or as them.

Their purpose, beyond the vague general idea of "protect and serve their deity", is often shrouded in mystery to the point that not even the Champion knows their true calling until it is upon them. All they know is a general feeling pushing and pulling them in one direction or another.

Being the direct servant of their deity, Champions can not only dish out God-like judgement, but can speak directly to their deity for guidance at their shrines, heal the sick, and confirm blessing upon their deity's followers.

Champions are often highly respected, no matter their race or background, due to their significance and holiness; although this respect is out of equal parts reverence as it is fear.
