Djabelle

Bicchi crystals and the technologies they power are a fantastic boon to the world, providing exceptionally high-density energy with -- in theory -- virtually zero toxicity or emissions.   However, damaged or improperly-secured magitek can release magical radiation into the environment, which can lead to disastrous effects. Living things exposed to this radiation over time tend to be mutated into gruesome, monstrous versions of their past selves. These are collectively known as djabelle, from the Fouransh word meaning "undead." Even a minor leak, if left untreated, can lead to disastrous results. It is for this reason that it is so vital that magic engines be handled only by skilled technicians and mages handle damaged cannuli quickly, among other precautions.   This is especially problematic since minor leaks are nearly imperceptible to anyone but a sorceress, though major leaks can be seen by the way they seem to warp reality: not unlike a gas leak, but where the bending and distortion is not merely a trick of light.   Mutated creatures may grow extra limbs, increase in size, and generally become erratic and aggressive. Plants seem to develop a sentience.   Certain species have specific names for their djabelle forms; others are referred to with more general names.   A human djabelle is called a vampire. A wyvern djabelle is called a dragon or a drake. More generally, land animals who become djabelle are known as behemoths; aquatic creatures are leviathans; flying creatures are called zizzes; and plants are called dryads.
