Kova the Conqueror
Kova the Conqueror was an ancient Selkie mercenary, politician, and warlord who built the First Selkie Empire. She is remembered now as a wise and skillful queen and conqueror synonymous with ambition and imperial authority. Little is remembered of her and her clan beyond the murky semi-legendary stories of 1,800 years past.
Kova was a brilliant mind who was installed as the leader of coalition forces during the later War of the Five Deserts by Ahavu the Serpent, a selkie warlord who had recently seized control of the Khilaian Isles and was attempting to unite the disparate selkie peoples into a single centralized bureaucratic realm. She betrayed Ahavu and deposed him, seizing the throne for herself and using her military position to sweep over Western Samvara.
Kova's conquests arguably 'selkie-fied' Ahavu's centralizing reforms and made them permanent through a rapid influx and wealth and prestige. While she did not live long after her conquests and her empire crumbled almost immediately after her death, she is inarguably one of the most important historical figures in building the Khilaia as the global power it is today. If Ahavu had gone unchallenged, the selkies may have been absorbed into the Pratasam feudal empires of the West, like Safimir or Ejilarna. Instead, the selkies became a power in their own right and broke away from those sedentary traditions to pursue their own blend of nomadic traditions.
