toji: Barred From Death

toji are individuals who have been barred from the cycle of life and death. The word itself is from masuge-dǎo.   While they are barred from the cycle, most individuals do suffer a fatal wound immediately beforehand. In the moment, their body dies and their "soul" persists, drawing immediate attention from jensò, who seals their soul permanently back to their body. The seal itself, always on the neck, is also branded on their souls. He also spirits them away to various remote locations, as they all take time to heal and awaken (from months to years, even decades).

Causes

The afflicted are effectively cursed with it by the gods. The two who most often are involved with doing so are jensò and hìzámạ́.   The general consensus among mortals is that toji have greatly angered the gods, but that isn't necessarily true. The main reason to make someone a toji is that they are extremely unpredictable and extremely powerful in magic use. Beings with similar skill levels can figure out a way to ascend to godhood from the afterlife (like Some Random Fucker), and a loose canon with the destructive potential of the Chicxulub impactor and no magic limits is something that none of the gods really want to deal with.

Symptoms

Quite obviously, those afflicted are unable to die. They are also unable to sustain permanent damage, be it loss of limb, flesh wounds, or tattoos. Technically, they can still get piercings, but the piercing will only last while the jewelry is worn and tends to completely heal closed near instantly after jewelry is removed.   An inconvienient effect for everyone is that toji are extremely difficult to track via magic signature. Unlike regular magic signatures, toji's are void of their individualized characteristics unless one is within a very short distance of them (in the range of ten feet, max). This was intended, so that toji were unable to easily find one another, and thus couldn't organize or rally against the gods (though very few of them would even be interested in doing so). What was unintended, however, was the fact that the gods also can't track them. Additionally, most toji supress their magic signature out of habit and to blend in, so their magic levels can't be tracked either.   toji can effectively tag one another with magic in order to get around this, but they have to do so in person (and the chances of them running into one another are pathetically low).   toji are almost paused in time-- their bodies are stuck as they were before their fatal wound (all wounds/scars from beforehand are permanent, but they cannot sustain permanent wounds afterward), save from Magic Staining/Discoloration, which does continue to spread. They are also very much stuck in time mentally, and find it extremely difficult to change or mature (partially from the condition, and partially from isolation).

Cultural Reception

toji have become the horror stories parents tell their children to scare them into behaving.   The beings themselves are considered taboo, as they have angered the gods. In common folklore, toji are almost always the evil the protagonists fight against. In older, less common myths, toji are benevolent, but lost, spirits who help all they encounter before aimlessly drifting along, trying to find their place in the world.   Other conditions associated with toji, such as Magic Staining/Discoloration are also stigmatized (as is explained in the linked article).

This is the seal placed on every toji. It features the character for jensò, the life and death cycle, with the bottom portion inverted over the top. This signifies that the cycle is forever closed to the individual. (Please ignore the ancient art of Xianshèng's old design)

Glossary

toji : immortal, (has kind of a rude/negative connotation, as it only refers to those who pissed off the gods enough to be barred from dying entirely- sometimes used as an insult amongst mortals)
