not quite tengu
wings, feathers on different parts of body, feet/hands kind of talon-like
taboo to show face or body aside from wings; all wear masks of different species of birds and very, very modest (covering) dress. All juviniles are given simple masks, without defined features, and they are to design their permanent mask during adolescence. Each must decide on a bird species, but minor alterations of the mask may be made in the case of damage to it. Each species denotes much of the characteristics of the being, as they are to choose species they relate to/identify with the most. The head of each village has final say on the species of the mask-- they provide reasoning that the individual may not have considered, if the choice is different.
this species was created by hìzámạ́, and is exclusively male. The mountains they are native to (in the Northeast Archipellago) are often subject to heavy magic fog/mist, and every so often it coalesces into an egg.
Traditionally, they are monks that only join with the wider world during specific events and to teach about hìzámạ́. (Although this was established only after the archipelligo-wide reanimation war, which they were also part of). Of course, there are those that reject tradition to some degree, but it is exceedingly rare and usually due to massive outside influence.
Basic Information
Anatomy
"Since they have a syrinx, they can have any voice they please. However, the way they speak (when they are using their mouth and just mimicking the human larynx) stays mostly the same (unless they’re trying to put on an accent or smth). When they perfectly mimic, they have to keep their mouth open and use only their syrinx to speak, which looks extremely off-putting." already did the research for my h*zbin h*tel oc, just rephrase.
Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Juviniles are a legendary target for trifficking. not-tengu are rumored to be extraordinarily beautiful beneath their masks, but adults are too powerful to take. blonde antag was a victim of this.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Juvenile not-tengu are referred to as their feather color (i.e. "[color] feather"). Adult not-tengu are referred to as the species of their mask (e.g. Crow, Bluejay, Hawk, etc.), even if there are others with that chosen species. It's a way to separate themselves from "worldly pursuits" or individualistic identity (to varying degrees of success).
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Monastic order; (children, adolescents, and young adults notoriously terrible at separating themselves from individualistic identity and squabbles; not all, of course, but a common issue)
Common Taboos
Exposing one's face, exposing one's body. Breaking their vow of monastic celibacy; which, in their view was basically the other two taboos wrapped into one act, with even more taboos on top (surrender to "base" desires of men, emotional intimacy, etc.)
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Not fond of those that did not originate on the archipelligo; traffickers of not-tengu are virtually never natives and often go after other native species as well.
View Masuge rather strangely; see them as closer to "animal" than to "mortal" which has their thoughts split. On one hand, they live (relatively) in harmony with their environment and i totally lost my train of thought
