Great Chieftaincy

A Great Chieftaincy are in charge of tribal chiefs in their federation. During political situations the members of the Great Chieftaincy answer to the Kember, during military situations, they answer to their regional Pillar. Each tribe of the Great Chieftaincy is annotated by the suffix -Eya.   Due to many cultural differences the head of the Great Chieftaincies go by many names:
  • In the North and Western Pillars they are called Oloye or the female equivalent, Iyaloye
  • In the Eastern Pillar, High Chief
  • In the Southern Pillar they are called Kyomesi

Qualifications

The title of Great Chiefs are hereditary, although one's tribe can be promoted to the Great Chieftaincy by order of the Emperor of Exum or by popular vote of the The Kember.

Duties

A member of the Great Chieftaincy can act as a intermediary to disputing tribes, if he or she so feels. They act as members of their respective Pillar's private council advising them in the regional affairs of state and act in the Pillar's stead in his absence. They also supply armies in the case that their Pillar calls for spears in defense of the region.   As members of the Kember, they can also be called upon by the Emperor of Exum to act as emissaries in foreign lands.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A member can be dismissed either as Chief of their Great Chieftaincy or can have their whole tribe removed or demoted. Grounds for dismissal can range from treason to failing to provide sufficient spears when called upon.

History

Prior to the Unification of Exum the Great Chieftaincy represent that of many tribal states. The Great Chieftaincy was established at the behest of the 12 Cheifs, the predecessor of the The Kember and the men that would soon become the Four Pillars of Heaven that begged Makonnen, the Unifier to lead their armies in the fight against the Highmen and the rouge tribes that sided with Rule at the end of the @Third Age.
