Angels
Crafters of the universe and harbingers of destruction. The angels acted as God's assistants in the creation of the known universe, populating the site he simply preserved. As they first dabbled with sapient species on earth, however, conflict arose. One group determined that the angels must watch over their new children, lest they spell disaster for themselves on that around them. The other party, however, maintained that interfering with earthly affairs was nothing but a slippery slope, and that any fate that befalls humanity will have been their own doing. Debates turned into arguments, and argument turned into infighting. Soon, two distinct factions were carved of the once-familial race.
Their presiding God took favor of the more conservative group and branded the others as demons, plunging their halos into their skulls and banishing them to walk the earth they seemed to care so much for. To further emphasize their powerlessness, the demons had their wings stripped from them and were bound to the soil beneath them. Even with these handicaps, however, the demons refused to give up their ideals. Their powers forever bound to their angelic souls, they were able to erect massive constructions fit for humanity habitation; a colossal ocean-spanning bridge, a tower that scratched up against the heavens, and many more supernatural wonders. These wonders would come to be known as the Affronts.
Demons lived alongside humans for generations, sharing knowledge and power at request. Their involvement in history rapidly accelerated their informational and technological advancement. Just as humanity seemed to be reaching its apex, however, the demons disappeared without a trace. Many believed it was due to some kind of angelic interference, while some doubt their existence altogether after countless years, citing their work as that of ancient civilizations. This loss shook humanity to the core, but they were forced to build on from the base provided for them.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Large, ornate halos hover above cores black as onyx, suspended within a dark haze where a head would be. These cores project an eye-like pattern a few inches from the physical core. A hollow neck extends downwards into the shoulders and torso, the latter cut off at the 'stomach', similarly suspended as the core. Most of the angel's body is disjointed, including their torsos; thin and almost ornamental.
Genetics and Reproduction
Angels cannot directly reproduce, nor impregnate a human. They must use their "cores" to spawn a soul fit for translation into a human vessel. The appearance and traits of this soul depend on the host's original genes. The soul transferal occurs close to birth as to not allow conflict between the two souls, eventually leading to a merging.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
The angels are omniscient, able to see even the most minute details of every corner of the world. They don't directly see, smell, or hear, but they can feel the essence of these kinds of perception. With the right affinity, an angel can even sense aspects of the foreign worlds and planes.
