Trigger Warnings
While I'm not actually a big fan of Trigger Warnings, despite having PTSD myself, I understand the need for them. This is the "living document" of trigger warnings that may pop up in the GrimGlory world.
GrimGlory is rated M for Mature...well, as mature as any military veteran gamer geek can be, anyways. As noted on the front page, GrimGlory is meant to be an adult campaign setting, drawing from classic Sword & Sorcery, GrimDark, Gothic, and a lot of the darkest legends, myths, and realities of our world.
Dark humor required to play.
Tropes!
All of them. If it exists, assume it's probably around here some place or another.
Triggers!
There's a lot of them! I might forget a few, but I'll add them when I find them or you can message me to let me know I've missed something. Now, most of these I just put on here as a fair warning. I have no idea if they'll ever come up, but... GrimDark Sword & Sorcery setting implies a lot of them.
In no particular order of relevance beyond alphabetical.
- Ableism. Despite this being a world of magic, it is also a world of war and conquest, where people suffer grievous injuries that even magic cannot overcome...and sadly, much like in our own world, those who are "different" are shunned (also covered under Prejudice & Persecution below)
- Alcohol & Alcoholism. There are dwarves, soldiers, sailors & pirates, nobles, merchants... yeah, there's booze and alcoholics everywhere.
- Assault. Not just
- Bestiality. Usually just referenced in passing as the source for some inhuman races (we're dealing with ancient gods here...), but there are anthropomorphic "Furry" races as well.
- Brutality. "Police" (aka City Guards, Military Guards, etc) brutality happened even back in the dim past...there will always be those who abuse their positions of power in one way or another.
- Blood. Whether spilled on the battlefield, drank from a goblet, or used in a dark ritual, there be blood here!
- Bones. Skeletal minions, liches, and other boney creatures exist here too... so yeah...plus, they make for great spooky decor!
- Branding & Tattooing. Whether self-inflicted or imposed upon another, there are magical and non-magical brands and tattoos used for various reasons, whether to mark one as a member of a secret cult or to impose control over another.
- Cannibalism. Long pork's on the menu for some cultures!
- Child Abuse/Death. This is one of my triggers, so this will most often happen off-camera, but sadly, it's not only a result of war and conquest, but just a sad fact of life.
- Childbirth. Probably not more than mentioned, but it's possible the players may have to deliver a baby or two...
- Cults. So many, many, MANY cults. Some good, some bad, and even some indifferent...
- Cursing. This applies more to "black magic" such as hexes, but also applies to foul language (see below)
- Death. All Four of the Horsemen are present in GrimGlory, even if they aren't recognized as such by the natives of the world.
- Decapitation & Defenestration. If it's good enough for Conan...plus, some creatures don't die until you remove their heads!
- Demons & Devils. All sorts of otherworldly beings are present in this world (Angels, Demons, Devils, the Fae, Jinn, etc). Some may have similarities to those found in Judaism and other religious cultures, and they rarely have the best interests of humanity in mind.
- Drugs & Drug Use. Alchemy is a major field of study in this world, both magical and mundane, and drugs for recreational and non-recreational uses are present.
- Emesis. I had to look up this one, but apparently it means vomiting. I mean, I don't personally enjoy it, but we don't kink shame here! Beyond that, it happens in combat, fear, disgust, etc.
- Escort Missions. Er, sorry, but there might be a few of these here and there, even if I hate dealing with these in video games...
- Eugenics, Fantasy-Style. Racial purity bullshit is another thing that happens, so it's here as something to be confronted and dealt with.
- Famine. All Four of the Horsemen are here.
- Fire. I mean, not only do we have dragons (do we?) here, but wizards with their fireballs....
- Foul Language. Outside of dialogue, I'll try and keep foul language to a minimum, however, words such as damn and hell will probably be quite common!
- Genocide. Both in the past and presently occurring, it is a sad fact of existence that people can't just get along despite their differences.
- Gore. Blood, bones, viscera... yeaaaaah...
- Hostages. Aka, living story hooks! Well, hopefully still living...
- Incest. If GRRM can do it, if the European Monarchy can do it, yeah... it'll probably be here somewhere.
- Kidnapping & Abduction. Again, another convenient story hook, but yeah, Helena of Troy may not be a part of this world, but she's far from the first maiden to be abducted...
- Mental & Physical Disorders. We're all mad here...from PTSD and countless other physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual traumas to various psychosis and psychotics.
- Miscarriage. Mentioned in passing, maybe...but it may happen given the world...
- Misgendering. As a CIS Male who's had long hair quite often, it happens even with well-intentioned people. It may not actually come up, but tossing this on here for completeness sake.
- Murder. I mean, besides the murderhobos being unleashed upon the world...
- Nudity. Buttocks, and breasts, and genitals, oh my! Note, the Old Wolf is an equal opportunist, so for every chainmail bikini clad vixen, there'll be an oiled, muscular himbo in a itty, bitty loincloth that hides absolutely nothing.
- Occult. So very, very much of the occult, and I don't just mean the rumors about Dungeons & Dragons back in the 80s.
- Pedophilia & Pederasty. This one is touchy. All I can say is that it won't be glorified, but between war, societes based on Ancient Greece, etc... it'll be mentioned in passing.
- Physical abuse. Mentioned in passing.
- Plague. Hark! Here's the 3rd Horseman...
- Poisoning. This is the non-self-inflicted type (see alcohol & drugs above).
- Pregnancy. I mean, there'll be pregnancy mentioned about... and besides the fact this is a world of magic, there is also a subrace inspired by the "Omegaverse" so it's not just limited to biological women!
- Profanity. Dammit, I already covered this in curses & foul language (above) but considering I'm a former sailor...covering it again is probably a good idea.
- Prejudice & Persecution. Homophobia, Misogony, Misandry, Racism, Sexism, Classism, Caste Systems, Religious Persecution, Cultural Persecution, Ageism... all the Isms and Phobias are unfortunately here, in one way or another.
- Prostitution. The oldest profession is fully represented here, in all its dubious glory; and although we don't shame sex workers in real life, there is some prejudice and persecution (the warning immediately preceding this one) that goes along with it.
- Racism & Speciesism. Yes. Sadly, it's here, in all it's various ugly forms. While I point it out in Prejudice & Persecution, race is yet another Ism/Phobia that's convenient to use as an excuse for hatred, but it's a big one, so I'm leaving it here.
- Rape & Sexual Abuse/Assault. Ugh, nonconsensual and dubious sexual situations may occur or be mentioned...there may be bodice ripping, prison encounters, and other such situations. Again, not glorified, but... yeah.
- Religion. This is a pagan, heathen world. Every culture, every race, has their own gods and beliefs, and they all think they're the only correct one...
- Sadomasochism. Yep, these people exist even here!
- Self-Harm. Some of those who practice blood magic will harm themselves to use their magic in a pinch. There are also self-flagellants who harm themselves for religious beliefs, and masochists who rather enjoy it...
- Sexual Harassment. In a world where loincloths and chainmail bikinis exist, so too does sexual harassment. Hell, it exists no matter what someone is, or isn't, wearing.
- Sexual Situations & Explicit Scenes. In some stories, sex and sexuality may play a key component. Those "chapters/stories" will be marked as containing sexual content, so for those of you who prefer closed doors, you can skip over them!
- Skeletons. Er, I believe I covered this one under bones, but yep... skeletons exist inside every living vertebrate, and there are even some skeletons that walk around without their meatsuits attached!
- Slavery. Much like Racism & Speciesism, slavery exists in this world. Whether victims of military conquests or peddled in the flesh markets, while some cultures abhor the practice, others have been built upon exploiting other living beings... and much like those in the real world who do so, they're the scum of the earth.
- Snakes, Spiders, and other creepy crawlies. Oh yeah, baby... these beasties, both wee and not-so-wee, are scuttling and slithering about, and the players are gonna hafta do some pest control!
- Starvation. Apart from Famine... sadly, there will always be those who are forced to do without, as well as environmental concerns beyond the control of any mortal.
- Suicide. Please, if you are considering suicide, reach out. Whether it's the Suicide Hotline (dial 988), the Veteran's Crisis Line (dial 988 then Press 1)... or feel free to drop me a line and we'll chat.
- Terrorism. Sometimes, one country's terrorist is another's freedom fighter... and sometimes, they're just monsters.
- Violence. Beyond combat initiated by murderhobos...I mean, players...violence will be mostly off-screen or mentioned in passing.
- War. And lo! The 4th Horseman arrives!
- Weapon-Based Violence. I'm still not sold on guns in this setting, so there probably will not be any gun violence, but other weapon violence is on the dice tables.
If I've forgotten anything, please send me a message and I'll add it to the list.
