Tinker's Toy Shop

Nestled between the smog-choked alleys and brass-plated storefronts of Windbury, Tinker’s Toys stands out like a cheerful song in a room full of clanking machines. Run by the eccentric and warm-hearted gnome woman Shanglim, the shop is a whirlwind of chaotic joy. While other buildings in the city exude harsh edges and utilitarian gloom, Tinker’s Toys bursts with life—mechanical critters scurrying across floors, clinking gears spinning in children’s hands, and soft yellow lamplight pouring through fogged windows. It’s more than just a store; it’s a haven for imagination, a shrine to whimsy in a city defined by industry.

Purpose / Function

Tinker’s Toys was built with one purpose in mind: to bring joy. Shanglim, having been unable to have children of her own, poured all of her affection, time, and craftsmanship into designing toys that would delight and inspire. Over the decades, she created a legacy—her toys are in homes across the city, from soot-stained cottages to noble parlors. While some see the shop as a successful business, those who know Shanglim understand it's her act of love for the city’s youth. Each piece on her shelves is not just a toy, but a lesson, a friend, or a dream made tangible.

Architecture

Despite Windbury’s love for symmetry and reinforced steel, Tinker’s Toys seems to reject formality. The building is squat and sprawling, with rounded corners, bowed wooden beams, and a slate roof patched with bronze sheets. The walls lean ever so slightly inward, giving the impression of a house that’s constantly shrugging under the weight of its own enthusiasm. Inside, the ceilings are low, the floors creak, and shelves tower above head-height, loaded with inventions both brilliant and bizarre. Every inch of space is used, often in ways no architect could have foreseen—Shanglim builds not for comfort, but for wonder.

History

Shanglim opened the shop years before the Warforged Factory began production. While the city later threw its efforts into machinery of war and progress, she turned her attention to the one thing everyone seemed to forget—joy. Her first toy was a clattering beetle made from discarded watch parts, sold to a boy who would later become a professor of engineering. Since then, her fame only grew. Children speak of the shop like it’s enchanted, and adults return just to see what’s new, what’s strange, and what memories linger on the shelves. Through all of Windbury’s political shifts and technological revolutions, Tinker’s Toys has remained a constant—a place where gears serve wonder instead of war.

Tourism

No visit to Windbury is complete without a stop at Tinker’s Toys. Tourists and scholars alike are drawn in by the blend of whimsical artistry and clever design. Children of diplomats have been known to beg for wind-up dragons or talking turtles, while visiting mages quietly take notes on the mechanical marvels hiding in plain sight. Occasionally, a child from far away will receive a toy in the mail with no sender listed—Shanglim’s quiet way of spreading happiness beyond the city’s haze. The shop is featured in numerous guidebooks as “the soul of Windbury in miniature."
