The Pit Bank
A joint pub and guildhall, this elegant building now serves as the preferred gathering space of the 'merchant' class of Reeds, unofficially governing not only the town but the entire region of Biyllmoor. Overlooking the main plaza in Ruundo, The Pit Bank's importance in the town cannot be lost upon visitors. Decadence and power oozes from every brick, ornamentation lavishes each side. A copper-ribbed onion dome crowns the structure atop its overbearing, singular tower - the tallest in the city of course. The Pit Bank was what mattered in Reeds and The Pit Bank had no shame in saying it.
Purpose / Function
The Pit Bank began humbly as one of the first buildings within the town as a measly pub called The Murky Dog. Yet, as the town grew so did the pub. Its central position in Ruundo made it popular amongst residents. With the introduction of peat mining and the creation of unprecedented wealth in the area, a sudden new merchant class was established with immense influence in Reeds. The creation of the guild, Stewards of Colliers, created the need for a meeting place - by this point Reeds itself had grown to cover the entirety of Ruundo, leaving no space for further construction. The Murky Dog began to be evaluated.
The building was bought out by the Guild and renamed The Pit Bank. Whilst the pub remained relatively intact, large renovations transformed much of the interior into large (and opulent) rooms for meetings, speeches and plans. It was here that the decision to dredge a harbour was agreed upon, beginning the process of the transition of power in the town relocating into the pub.
As the smuggling merchant class infiltrated the town, The Pit Bank once again began to see new behaviour occuring within its walls. Shadier characters began to find themselves in powerful seats, inviting their dirty business with them. The Stewards of Colliers lost their meaning but retained their power - The Pit Bank, and Reeds, were in control of a smuggling syndicate, still operating with the legality of a guild.
Alterations
The facade of the building has been reconstructed multiple times, each time grander, richer and more extravagent. It is said that The Pit Bank has the oldest hearth in Reeds, yet not an original brick remains. Further floors have been added to the building, bringing it from its original 2 floors to the now excessive 7, each grasping further out like the ambitions of its patrons.
The most striking addition to The Pit Bank has come to define it - and the Reeds skyline; a sturdy octagonal tower stretches far above the rest of the town, crowned with a copper-ribbed onion-shaped dome - an imitation of the many palaces of Emris. The tower is largely empty. It merely demonstrates who is King of the Bog.
