History

The creation of the Nilbog is confused and Mysterious. No one knows when the first Nilbog was created, though many theories as to why it exists have been. The 2 Biggest come as the following:   The Drow God Claun Mistif was one of the many brothers of Corellion who had witnessed the death of Maglubyiet. Unlike the other Elves of the Feywild, Claun viewed the execution as barbaric, and looked with Pity upon the dead fey, and ended up being the reason he turned to Lolth, and eventually would be banished to the Underdark with his Drow Brethren. However, at some point he would leave the plane, and witness something. When he returned, changed, he would discover the Goblins, the mortal manifestation of Maglubyiet, and would find many of them disenfranchised and sad. As a form of repent, he would create a spirit that will always uplift the spirits of the saddest Goblins in the world. To do this, he created an Artifact called The Orb of Mischief, and buried it into Maglubiet's body, causing a tree to sprout from it.   When Maglubyiet became a God, he would be set into the Domains of War and Trickery. During this, he became a master of tricks and traps, allowing him to evade the Eladrin who hunted him. Maglubyiet knew that he would be caught at some point, and hatched a devious plot. He would transfer a piece of his power into an Artifact called The Orb of Mischief. It's chaotic energy meant not even he knew what it would do. When he was caught and Killed, the Orb would eventually be drawn to his Corpse. It would burry itself into the corpse of Maglubyiet, growing a massive tree from the body. The tree would begin spawning spirits of the Nilbog, and any depressed Goblins in the world would become a Nilbog.   Because Maglubyiet is dead, and Claun Mistif is insane, it is hard to get a definitive answer. Maglubyiet is petty enough to create such and item, and his powers would allow him to create such an item. However, Claun Mistif has shown remorse for Maglubyiet, and had already done something similar for the Drow, creating the Harlequin Troupe. Creating a spirit that turned Goblins into small Jesters would not be out of place for him.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Nilbogs are hated by Hobgoblins and Bugbears. They cannot kill them, and more often than not, are forced to play along their pranks, due to their magical powers. Any weak-willed creature will almost always hate Nilbogs, as the annoying tricksters will never leave them alone. Goblins view Nilbogs as annoying, but end up wanting to become one due to how they are treated in Goblin culture. Due to their Goblin heritage, they are mostly hated by everything anyway, though one exception exists. Most Tortles find the actions of the Nilbog entertaining, due to their stronger will, and their lack of understanding of what a Nilbog is.
