While taking a walk in the park, Jaxson comes across a young witch who shows incredible power for her age, and tries to convince her to join the team.
Breath in, breath out. Khalia repeated this to herself in her head as she moved energy towards her, then away from her. It's a technique she found online to help control her power, by becoming more in-tune with how it works. She's always had issues with controlling her natural abilities, as she had a lot of power stored within her, despite only being 17. She's made it her goal to start controlling them better and learning new spells and abilities, as she wanted to become a hero after graduation. Of course, her father would never go for it. He wanted her to go to college and get a degree, and join the rest of the world as a normal person. She knew it was because he didn't want her to feel ostracized because of her powers, but she didn't want to hide them. She believed she was granted this power for a reason, and wanted to use it for good. As her thoughts drifted, her energy became shaky and unstable. It shook the dirt around her, and she quickly focused. As she breathed in and out more, she looked around. No one else was in the area she was in, so it should be okay to practice some of her spells in the open. She stood up, releasing the energy she was balancing back out into the air. She breathed out as she tried to remember some of the spells she needed to work on. Ah, right. The frost spell. Ice in magic was hard to work with normally. People didn't really know why, as water was easy to work with for witches. Khalia hypothesized that it hard something to do with the existence of Glacians, the only beings known to handle ice manipulation perfectly fine. Maybe it upset the energy that witches had to draw on for ice magic, but no one knew for certain. She decided it wouldn't hurt to practice anyways. She knew of a basic frost spell that was just supposed to put frost on an object. If she could get good control of the ability and use it on a bigger scale, she could use it to immobilize someone temporarily. Perfect for helping the capture of villains. She adjusted her stance, and held out her hand. She drew a symbol in the air with her finger, purple energy keeping the sigil in the air. Since it was a spell she didn't know very well, she had to use sigils for it. For spells that she knew well, she just had to picture the sigil in her head, and could cast it that way. When she pushed on the sigil, she focused her attention on a flower a few feet away from her. Good distance, and small enough. She focused her energy onto it, and suddenly the flower started to develop frost on it. Khalia smiled, before the flower started to completely freeze over and dry up. Her smile dropped. She somehow pushed it too far. "Dangit," she muttered to herself. "How did you do that?" Khalia squeaked after hearing an unfamiliar voice behind, which sent her into flight or fight mode. She quickly jumped forward, turned around, and launched a basic fire blast spell in order to fight off whoever had approached her. Dealing with constant weirdos made her defensive. "Ow!" the person shouted, rubbing their arm, which now had singed hairs with a red spot where he got burned. "I-I'm sorry! I didn't mean-" Khalia started to apologize when she realized that the man meant her no harm, but paused when she recognized his face. He simply looked up at her and gave her a cheeky smile. "Don't worry, I've had worse! Ice burns feel worse than fire burns to me at this point, but that's what I get for living with a Glacian," he laughed, and Khalia was certain of who he was after that statement. "Y-You're Jaxson Greaves! The co-leader of the Divine Guardians!" she suddenly exclaimed, then covered her mouth when she realized how loud she was. He just simply laughed again. "I suppose most people in this city know who I am at this point," he said whimsically, although Khalia detected a bit of sadness in his voice. "But, anyways, how did you do that spell?" "Huh?" Khalia questioned, starstruck and forgetting what she was originally doing. "That frost spell! I assume you're a witch, correct?" Jaxson asked, and she nodded. "Most witches aren't able to even grasp the basics of a frost spell, but you somehow managed to push it too far. I've never seen that before!" "Um- uh- thank you..." she muttered, not knowing how to react to an idol of hers complimenting her. "What other kind of spells are you able to do?" he asked curiously. "Like, what kind of big spells?" "Um, I'm still practicing a lot of my spells, I don't have a full grasp of my powers yet..." she mumbled. She didn't want to embarrass herself in front of him, so she was trying to dissuade him from questioning further. "It's okay! Just show me something that you're at least somewhat comfortable with," he said with a smile, and Khalia suddenly felt more at ease. He had such a bubbly personality, and saying no to him would be like saying no to a puppy. "Okay..." she said, and stood with her feet shoulder length apart. She decided she was going to do her bubble shield spell, as she had to cast it a lot during freshman year due to bullying, so she was quite familiar with it. She breathed in deeply, then out, and moved her hands and fingers in a circle quickly, then spread them out. Instantly, a purple bubble formed around her, see through enough that she could see out of the bubble perfectly, and people could still see in. "Woah! Is that a bubble shield?" Jaxson asked as he took a few steps back. The bubble appeared really quickly, quicker than he had ever seen. "Yeah, it's a protection spell I'm really familiar with," Khalia explained, and Jaxson pondered for a moment. "Are you able to cast spells while in the bubble and have the effects appear outside the bubble?" he asked, and she looked at him, confused. "Um, I don't think I've ever tried that," she answered. Why was he asking all these things of her? "See if you can!" he encouraged with a smile, clearly impressed with her so far. She swallowed nervously, hoping she didn't mess up in front of her idol. She thought of a spell to cast, and decided on another basic fire spell since it was something she was familiar with. She corrected her stance in the bubble, pictured the sigil in her head, and then directed fire to come out of the bubble, and it worked. A flame came out in the direction she was facing, outside of the bubble and barely missing Jaxson, who just stood there in awe. "That's amazing!" he said as she ended both of the spells. She blushed with gratitude. It meant a lot to hear such praise from someone she looked up to. "I haven't seen something like that in person before! You can defend while still taking offensive measures!" "I've never tried that before, I'm surprised I actually did it," she laughed, embarrassed.
