Fangs of Zaradae

The Fangs of Zaradae are an impressive and forbidding range of peaks, located in the center of the Ebonwood Forest in the Kingdom of Mera. They are an inspiration for many fanciful tales and wild stories created by local troubadours and woodsmen of the south. The mountains are very difficult to traverse. The overland terrain is incredibly steep and no known passes extended into its interior.   Inhospitable weather that continued year-round made climbing hazardous, in what was an already remote location. It was impossible for creatures less powerful than a dragon to approach the Zaradae Peaks safely by air, due to incredibly high winds which were constantly whipping across the peaks.

Geography

Some lonely peaks that stand on the mountain tops have a sharp cusp shape. Many people think that these protuberances are the dwellings of powerful wizards and formidable sorcerers. The vast mountains contained Kethendi, an abandoned Vayemnir settlement.   Somehow, Aarakocras manage to bypass the peaks' strong winds and build their nests on them not too far from where it is rumored that dragons slumber in nearby caves.

Ecosystem

Like most mountains the ecosystem of the domain mountains varies from its base to its peak. With a more temperate climate at the base is is home to a wider range of flora and fauna then the harsher peaks.

Localized Phenomena

Some rumors tell that, during the peaceful nights among the Fangs of Zaradae, strange flashing lights appear that attract or banish flying creatures that dare to fly nearby. According to other rumors, the Dragonborn created mysterious crystals that illuminated the mountains, while some unknown, sinister constructs emitted beams of light when they were exposed to the moonlight.

Fauna & Flora

The plant life within the Fangs of Zaradae is generally far larger than can be found in most other places. The most distinguished among these are the several varieties of carnivorous plants that can be found here. Many of the plants can also be identified by their tendency to have very thick, tough stems and stalks. In general, the vegetation is rather dense, with some clearings thinning out into rich grasses and shrubs.

History

The curious nature of the surrounding terrain and the sudden abruptness of the mountain range, seemingly out of place in the middle of the High Forest, has caused some to speculate that the Fangs of Zaradae were not naturally formed. If that was the case, their creation dated back to a time before elven recorded history.   The earliest recorded names for these mountains have been attributed to the Vayemnir of Zranaar Dominion, who named them for the Bronze Dragon Zaradae.   Despite the dangers of traversing the Fangs of Zaradae, the Vayemnir of Zranaar were known to have mined nearly-pure veins of iron and nickel within the Fangs of Zaradae.   In the 14th century AoF, the ancient green dragon Ongreth ‘The Hunter’ awakened from within his lair and consumed most of the mountains' Aarakocras. The surviving Aarokocra were known as the Nest of the Mistcliffs. Since then the majority of their villages were left abandoned and they have deteriorated beyond repair.
