Kingdom of Charmelac

The Kingdom of Charmelac is a sizeable kingdom in Aldion. Is has changed hands and size many times throughout history, but has existed in its current form for well over a century now. It has a mixed oceanic and humid continental climate and comprises large green plains as well as some significant broadleaf forests. A few mountain peaks towards the edges of the kingdom form one of the borders to some of its neighbours. While not focused on maritime activities, the country has a sizeable coastline. It managed to claim its first colony in Sinisterra in 1623.   The Kingdom is ruled by the De Verlaine royal family that has seen its struggles in recent years. Inheritance has been a heated topic for generations as the laws uphold an agnatic primogeniture system. Ever since the first members of the De Verlaine family rose to the throne in 1737, no king has had more than a single son, resulting in the entire estate always being inherited by this single male heir and the many daughters receiving nothing of the estate.   Upon the death of the last king, Nicholas de Verlaine, in 1854, his three daughters petitioned their new king and younger brother Étienne for a piece of the realm. After him and his council refused, the three daughters set sail for Sinisterra and launched a campaign to get the colonies to rebel against the king. With support of the local population and a large proportion of the military stationed in the colonies, the three sisters started a war in 1862 to claim the colonies as their own. After four years of sparse fighting they succeeded and proclaimed the new Royaume d’Aubigny. A new system was devised in which all three sisters hold power, with the eldest, Isabelle de Verlaine, serving as primary head of state.   Now 18 years after the loss of its Western colonies, the Kingdom of Charmelac has lost significant power, but is not to be underestimated. Having conquered and incorporated some smaller independent rulers around its borders, as well as by befriending stronger nations close to its borders, the Kingdom of Charmelac is on the up again.
