Targos
Targos is the capital and oldest city in the present-day nation of the same name. In pre-Zendylite Empire times, it was the capital of Ancient Targos.
History
Targos was one of the first great cities in the world, founded c.500BTC by the people who took their name from their city, the ancient Targotians. Though it was heavily damaged by the ravages of the Targotian Cataclysm, the city survived and its people went on to thrive afterward.
Though the balance of power began to shift definitively eastward in the 5th and 6th centuries ATC, Targos always remained the spiritual center of the Targotian people, until the establishment of the Zendylite Empire and the ascendancy of Col Zendyl. Even after the rise of the Empire, the Jewel of the West remained a destination for higher learning and pilgrimage, though second to the Imperial capital.
Points of interest
One major destination in the modern era is the ancient Targarch's Palace, which dates to c.100ATC (the original, built c.350BTC, was demolished in the Targotian Cataclysm). Today, it houses the Targotian Ministerial Council, the ruling body of the present-day state of Targos.
Another is the Sharr Bilota, or "Library of the World", possibly the greatest library in the world. It dates to c.250ATC, when it was built to replace the mostly demolished Bilota Targos (the ruins of which may still be seen in some of the catacombs and cellars of the Sharr Bilota). It was greatly expanded in the 1090's ATC by a bequest from the final will of first Sharrarch Zendyl Heste do Shaphel, including the addition of windows of Tanaari Colored Glass.
