Hayaqiago (hah-yah-KYAH-goh)

by hughpierre

Geography

Hayaqiago is a windswept stretch of coastline that runs for over fifty leagues along a cold, mist-laced ocean. The beach itself is covered in unusually large black granules worn smooth by centuries of tides and wind. The sand glints with faint violet hues under moonlight and warms slowly under the sun, retaining a low heat even on colder days.

Localized Phenomena

Fog Echos

In the warmer seasons, strong oceanic winds whip through the beach and drive waves violently against its stoney shore. Mists also roll in from the sea to shroud the coast in salty fog that sometimes linger for days and carry the tang of minerals.   The coarse sand bile clatter softly underfoot like dry beans and shimmer when wet. Their shape and size make the beach unsuitable for typical barefoot strolls, but echoing sounds carry strangely well across Hayaqiago.

Climate

The climate of Hayaqiago is one of sharp contrast. The beach begins in scrub-dotted dunes to the north, where salt-loving grasses and stunted trees grow along dark ridgelines, and bend in perpetual wind.    Further south, the beach flattens into long, shallow slopes that vanish beneath high tides, pocked with tidepools and shellstone outcroppings. Towering cliffs of chalk and granite flank parts of the interior coast, creating shadowed alcoves that trap warmth during the day and hum with insects at dusk.   At the far southern end, Hayaqiago ends at a narrow strait where the sea funnels into a long, glacial corridor between two peninsulas that freeze over seasonally. Thin layers of ice form on the surface at first, but by midwinter the entire passage becomes solid and forming a bridge of blue-white ice that allows for foot traffic and migrating beasts to pass from one side to the other.
