Chhukruna (CHOO-kroo-nah)

by hughpierre

Demographics

It is the most sparely populated district in Canna because it is the most fire prone. Indeed; several gas eruptions, earthquakes and spontaneous fires have historically destroyed many sectors. Only to be rebuilt by religious conviction despite numerous evacuations over its history.   The population is mostly transient and tightly controlled - composed of temple attendants, fire-watchers, maintenance engineers and acolytes on pilgrimage.

Government

Xiuhiztacuhqui

The White Flames are responsible for ensuring stability, protection and the overall functioning of the city. These dusky noblemen are composed of the lesser scions of old families placed in their positions by innoit generals to oversee the city's wealth transfer to its new masters.
In practice, this oversight takes the form of raiding vacated temples, repossessing heirlooms, arresting talented people and evicting households from their manses. The xiuhiztacuhqui draw their power from the material stuff in the city; no matter what or where they were originally. Several of residential palaces were systemically dismantled and portered away towards the other Four Corners in this way.

Architecture

Chhukruna is a purpose-built ceremonial district featuring wide avenues, large buildings and vast open spaces that contribute to a sense of emptiness. The buildings are made of dark, heat-resistant volcanic rock that were polished smooth and jointed with anti-seismic monumental architecture.

Geography

Fire Mountain

Chhukruna is a holy district caressing the slopes of the Fire Mountain itself. The terrain is treacherous, but it is believed that those deemed worthy can navigate it unscathed. From its tiered construction, the entire city can be overseen and is from where the occupying generals took for their headquarters.

Climate

Chhukruna’s climate is unrelentingly hot. Sulfurous winds come in sudden gusts and carry fine dustings of yellow that sometimes ignite dry tinder or exposed fabric. Only the rains are effective at keeping the district clean for a time. The water also disappears under the gravelly ground and smothers the underground fires that can crater the surface.
