Domain of the Shroud

Never wander off into a forest when mists begin to gather. Sometimes people do not return and are never seen again. Sometimes you have no choice in the matter for the Shroud may envelope you and you’ll find yourself somewhere completely different.

Lands of Suffering

Nightmares of what occurs here in these lands are guaranteed. Some victims are pulled for a mere day. Those who are unlucky get pulled for a weeks, months, years, or worst of all, eternity. In order to make what little sense you can of your surroundings, these are the few yet grand factors to take into account.

The Shroud

Gliding across the ground or swirling high in the air is the Shroud. Not only do they pull unwitting victims into the Shroud but also serve as the barriers between the prisons for each Icon. Those who try to flee a domain through the shrouded barrie may suffocate on them, are simply turned back around, or may end up in a different domain. It all depends on the whims of the Writers.

The Forces of the Shroud

Entities mainly from both the Fell and the Null, called the “Writers,” lock away the most heinous icons of the Florenic Worlds into their own prisons. Most are inscrutable and unknowable with their goals and intentions for those trapped in the mists. Some may provide gifts with dangerous caveats or find creative torments for a character. Some of these entities seek to inflict a creative sense of cruelty to those within the Shroud while others may seek to provide a harsh lesson.

The Nameless Host

One of the known and powerful names of the Writers is the Nameless Host. It reluctantly shares these domains with the other entities hence why many can survive such a wretched place. It has such a potent and malevolent presence that regions within domains may slowly wither and decay as its influence grows and its patience shortens. When the Shroud turns into inky blackness, that is how you know you have attracted the Host’s attention.

Mournival

A macabre and lackluster traveling troupe of theatrical productions, they have bargained with the Entities over the Shroud, and dubbed them the Writers. The arrangement is simple: The Actors and Directors can be spared from the main cruelties life has to offer in exchange for putting on shows that explain what could transpire in the future or even mock mortals that have caught the attention of the Writers.

  • Writers. Technically the godlike shades that control the Shroud, they arrange material that is given to the Directors.
  • Directors. Chosen from a select few Actors, Directors organize and put on showings. Often they may take on personas, the "Critic" and "Sage" being two common examples. The Critic is often one to point out flaws and problems while the Sage is more inclined to see potential and possibilities.
  • Actors. They are identifiable by their signature, simplistic blank masks with carved out eye holes and a mouth and wear a basic dark gray tunic and wraps underneath. The mask is what gives them the power to become different characters and illusions, able to swiftly shift forms as needed almost instantly but is also what binds them to the Mournival.
  • Icons and Domains

Imprisoned within unique domains are Icons. They are abominable people or beings who are unworthy of any sympathy or pity. What actions an Icon has taken in their former lives are what doomed them to their domain in the first place. Each Icon is imprisoned within a domain that is reflective of their past and specially designed to torment them. Who the Writers choose or why they lock away an Icon is up to their discretion alone.

Icons have varying control over the Shroud in their domains. They may open them to allow new characters into their prison or close them to prevent escape of their newfound prey. This does not mean that the Icon can leave their domain, far from it. Only the whims of the Writers can overrule an Icon’s power or powerful enough Icons can even manage to overcome the Writers.
