The Workshop

A Place of Peace and Reflection

"So Keys?" The student began, "Why keys?"
She looked at him at first with confusion then amusement. "Honestly, im not sure. I have theories, but i'm afraid it would be unethical to reveal them without further study." The Locksmith looked to each student as she spoke, her hands dancing about to illustrate her words.
"What we know is that The Cerulean built The Cities of Blue, and that they saw keys in the same way we did. Think of that. Such a race could have used any number of methods, but they chose a key." she paused and caught her breath, allowing her words to sink in.
"in fact, they had a fascination with keys. Keys decorate every single blue city I have been too. Sometimes the walls, held by statues, and yes, powering traps. Keys were a fundamental part of Cerulean culture, its only fitting they should be the same for us..."

The Workshop is a tower of 27 floors built in the Isles of Ireland. The Erin Isles are largely unpopulated and were seen as the most appropriate place due to the emerald beauty of the location and seclusion from the rest of the world. The towers function has changed dramatically over the years but at present it is the base of operations for all Keymakers in the world. It is a place of learning and scholarship, a place of research and invention, and foremost a place where the key makers gather to praise the glory of The Locksmith and The Watchmaker, who originally built the Tower shortly before their disappearance. The two great minds use this tower has a place rest and quiet study as well as a place to create without interference. It was here that The Imbued were created along with automatons who were created to replace them.

Meditation and Ceremony

The key makers have long regarded both the locksmith and the watchmaker as almost religious figures, not gods, but worthy of praise as key makers follow in their footsteps in hopes of elevating intelligence and attaining a higher sense of being.
Those in the East often remark how similar the ceremonies are to those associated with The Buddha and how similar the ceremonies are to those of various Buddhist sects.
In fact, it is believed that the first key makers, who were from the Orient, brought their traditions to the workshop and overtime, allowed them to evolve.
Each floor is specifically designed to suit a particular purpose. The two great minds that built the workshop actively insured that the proper tools and materials were always available, there is even a City of Blue named Fethiradon within a mile of the tower. Airships and phase rails are seen approaching and exiting the dock stations that extend from the towers frame as many cone seeking wisdom, work, or to sell their new found wonders.

Parker's Garden.

Surrounding the workshop are extravagant and lush gardens that reach far in all directions. They serve as a place of meditation for any who venture to the tower itself. It features many works of art and also many inventions created all over the world to serve as inspiration for those who wander it's winding paths. Some of these inventions were created by The Locksmith and The Watchmaker, gathered from the many places they visited. These Gardens border the quantum fields under the blue city and are kept in pristine condition by those who meditate within and gardeners, automatons suited to the many jobs required of a gardener. Parker's Garden got its name long after the two great minds disappeared.

Parker Pokets

Dr. Parker was a scientist aboard The Delerium who invented a method of creating pocket spaces in reality that could be nearly infinite in size, but able to fit in the palm of your hand. While Dr. Parker was an expert on dimensional spaces his true passions stemmed to the world of insects. The man collected many rare species during his multiversal travels, and the garden that shares his name does much the same. Every few hours many areas of the garden will change as plants vanish from this reality and return to the reality they were taken from. A new plant will then replace it for the same period of time. This allows for new inspiration in a major change of scenery for those who wander the gardens at all hours. The machine that is responsible for this was designed by Dr. Parker, and is capable of scanning many different realities and isolating Flora to bring to the garden. It is also capable of focusing on different elements of Florida such as the climate that it prefers in the time of day or night should it be bioluminescent during night time hours. The gardens themselves have many different elements to them that can change the overall climate of a given area. Plants and also the visitors who study and admire them will find a suitable area that will be most comfortable for them based on what they are used to.

The Keymakers of the Workshop

The key makers have many ceremonies that they practice in the workshop. Anointing, for example, it's one of the strangest ceremonies, and involves casting Aether gas over ones workspace, as if to purify it.
The most famous ceremony that takes place in the workshop is that of canonization. Once a year, the workshop will hold a ceremony in the mezzanine that is meant to recognize the efforts of one individual and their work. It is effectively a graduation ceremony that allows one to fully become a key maker. Every keymaker at one point was a scientist or an inventor who created something new or improved upon someone else's work in such a way that it was deemed worthy.

Praise or Worship?

There's a very fine line between mediation and worship for many who witness the various ceremonies the key makers engage in. Many who come to the Tower and search of knowledge and with the goal of becoming a keymaker are turned off by this fact and refuse to even begin training, as both The Locksmith and The Watchmaker were agnostic and often looked down on religious groups. Both great minds chose their words with great care when talking to their pupils and to any who may misinterpret or misuse their words. Sometimes that we can refuse to answer questions as their theories would be considered a fact by those who listen.   It is likely that the two great minds would abhor the way the keymakers operate and be even more upset at the fact that they do so in their name. This fact is not lost on the keymakers in any way. The key makers are actually divided into several groups and some refuse to participate in practices that feel and look more religious in nature.

The Tower

  • The Museum:The Keymakers have dedicated the first floor to the works and achievements of The Locksmith and The Watchmaker. Their many inventions, unfinished projects, journals, and published papers are all on full display with detailed information displayed for each.
  •
  • Two to Fifteen: The next 14 floors are dedicated to room and board for those that live in the workshop. Many people spend time here to learn or to teach, spending weeks, to months, to years in the tower. Initially these floors served as a home for The Locksmith and The Watchmaker, each one a purpose from study to research and experiments.
  •
  • Sixteen to Twenty: These floors have always been lecture halls and classrooms for those who came searching for the wisdom of the two great minds. Since then, their pupils turned masters have kept the tradition alive, holding seminars and teaching courses to any who want to learn, often making a tidy profit from their students, even after paying a percentage to the tower.
  •
  • The Keymakers Lab:The 21st is dedicated to the Keymakers and their craft. Several skydocks for material deliveries and traders looking to sell their found artifacts. The Keymakers are often hard at work, making Quantum Keys and the locks that come with them. This and all the floors above it came after the disappearance of the two great minds.
  • The Storage Room: The 22nd is entirely dedicated to storage. All materials required for creating the various wonders of the workshop are here. It also contains many finished products, featuring many crates filled with finished and salvaged keys.
  •
  • The Tourist Floors:[/I]the next two floors are dedicated to visitors. Here they open stalls to sell their wares to other travelers, rest at one in on of many rooms for rent, and refuel to continue their journey. It provides a continuous flow of income to the Keymakers and attracts tourism due to its many ornate halls.
  •
  • The Mezzanine: while many use lower floors to teach and learn the mezzanine is an entire floor dedicated to the presentation of scientific findings and debate surrounding those findings. Many come here to muse and pontificate on the nature of the world and reality itself. It is a vast floor with many rooms often dedicated to specific subjects. Tables surrounded by extravagant and what many claim to be the most comfortable chairs in the world
  •
  • The Secret Garden: The final two floors are not really floors at all, but three massive levels of a magnificent garden. It is here that some of the rarest botanicals are seeded, tended to, grown, and finally stored for the use of the Keymakers Very few have ever seen the inner workings of this garden. Some airships have gotten a little too close only to be shot down to the ground below. They are very secretive about what these botanicals are for. The Flora that grows in The Secret Garden are used in many ceremonies and solutions the Keymakers use. These botanicals are the secret to their ability to attune to keys. While few can even guess at what plants May grow here, the mysterious glow of Aether can be seen making the tower glow like a lighthouse at night.

"... but why? Why were keys so important. She stopped herself before speaking.
"Understand, revealing my series on why keys are so important could have many unintended consequences. There are many who consider my word law, and I would not have my words being taken out of their context. This race of beings dead value keys, that is definitely a fact. What I say now is conjecture. Is merely a theory that doesn't necessarily have much evidence to support it." She paused and looked the student in the eyes.
"Are you sure you want to know it after realizing it is likely wrong?" The student nodded, and an uneasy silence fell on the lecture hall.
" I believe it has something to do with their ability to travel too many worlds. I believe they value keys so much because in many ways they, or at least their cities, serve as keys to these other worlds. When they first emerged, they had to have come from somewhere and we know for a fact that they were not under the ground before. These cities spring into existence from other realities beyond our own. This technology is all over the place when it comes to The Ceruleans. Past this, I'm afraid I can say no more."
