Republican School

The Republican School is an institution that has the function of a general and compulsory Primary School in the Republic of Guntreland, with the aim of educating future adult citizens of the Republic of Guntreland. One Republican school is established for each district of the Republic.

Old regime

In the old regime, education was not compulsory: rich families provided for the education of their offspring at their own expense through private teachers or in royal schools and lyceums. Royal schools most often accepted to educate only the children of nobles and sometimes the King's people, although there were also a few royal schools intended for orphans who were left without parents in great public disasters. To little werewolves and vampires the doors of the schools were closed, by royal laws, without any legal exception.

The Republic

The Constitution of the Republic of Guntreland prescribed compulsory primary education for all citizens regardless of gender or race, but it could not be fully implemented in the conditions of the Underground Republic. After the Republic entered the public sphere, in the Year 11 of the Republic, the work of Republican schools began; the first generation that was covered by it from the first grade was the generation of children born in the Year 3 RC, while a shortened program was organized for children older than that age and still minors. The Republican School got its present form by the Decree of the National Assembly in connection with basic education from the Felinos 12 Year 8, which also moved the start of schooling to the sixth year of life. In the Republic of Guntreland, all children must attend state primary school, i.e. Republican school.

Role

The role of the Republican School is to enable the future adult citizens of the Republic to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for a successful and happy life, useful both for themselves and for their family, their territorial community and their Republic. In addition, according to the wording of the decree, another thing that the Republican School must spread to its students is a philosophy of life based on love and kindness, to despise hypocrisy and to love virtue, honesty and friendship.

Duration

The normal duration of the Republican School is ten grades, with the first grade starting at the age of seven (for five- and six-year-old children, pre-school programs are provided that do not include boarding). However, in the transitional period of the Revolutionary war, the decision of the Commander of the Department of Education foresees accelerated programs for those minors who entered the first grade when they were older than eight years, and so that they would finish their primary education before the age of eighteen.

Educators

Educational work in Republican schools is carried out by educators, who are appointed by the Republic Commander of the Department of Education, on the proposal of the locally competent District Committee. In the same way, one Head Educator, who is the head of the school, is appointed for each Republican school. Educators of the Republican School can be recognized by the emblem sewn on their suit, showing a tricolor fox holding a book in its teeth.

Territorial Organization

For each district of the Republic of Guntreland, one Republican school is established and functions. Republican schools are always located in rural areas.

Curriculum

Education in the Republican School is divided into economic, moral, natural and military.

Each student has four occupation educators: one farmer, one manufacturing worker, one craftsman and one merchant; four educators of natural sciences: biology, geography, mathematics and physics; as well as a lawyer-educator, responsible for teaching in the fields of the Constitution and law, organization of court and assembly simulations, but also for language and literature.

According to the curriculum of the school subjects, the students of the Republican School always have to spend more time in nature than in the school building, which does not include time of the night.

Military education includes infantry and cavalry maneuvers and familiarization with infantry and cavalry weapons and is carried out by officers of the Constitutional and Legal Army.

Every working day at the Republican School begins with the singing of the national anthem. The best students, and in certain cases all students, attend the most important Republican manifestations in the district, except for those in the public castle, which can only be attended by adult citizens. The Republican School organizes for all its students visits of all the holy places of the Revolution in their district, where they practice their literate and oratorical skills and listen to the solemn ramblings of their lawyer-educator.

Accommodation of students

The Republican school is based on a boarding school model, which means that all students spend the night in the school building. They sleep in a common room, regardless of the gender and race of the children. They lie down and get up at the same time, and they have three Republican hours for sleep. For vampire children, since daylight harms them and since they don't need sleep, certain curricular activities, sometimes outside the school building, are organized during the night. However, it is ordered that the children spend the decade day, as well as the night before and after it, in the home of their parent or guardian.

Nutrition

The Republican school provides food for its students, except on the decade day. All students are served the same meal when they eat at school (breakfast and lunch are served at school, except on decade days or when the children spend the whole day in the nature), with the possibility of giving special treats to the best in the learning and behavior categories. Also, those who during their agricultural and nature classes produced more food or found more fruits in nature can be rewarded with the right to eat what they produced or found.

Disciplinary rules

- Any physical violence (including fighting, hitting, slapping, hair pulling) in the Republican school is strictly prohibited - either between students or between students and educators (contrary to this in the royal schools it was common for students to be punished by the teacher with a cane, but physical violence was also tolerated among the students themselves). The only exception to this rule is combat simulations during military training, which are conducted according to the rules of military training.

- Quarrels and conflicts between students must be publicly presented before the school court, and not resolved by fighting and insults.

- It is forbidden to make fun of any student on the basis of any non-distorted characteristic.

- It is forbidden to arbitrarily leave the Republican School and live in another place (in particularly difficult cases and with prolonged absence from the Republican School, it can be sanctioned by the permanent loss of civil rights, which, instead of coming of age, the perpetrator will be able to obtain only when they prove themselves as citizens by doing something noble or useful for the Republic).

Violations of educational rules in the Republican School are the responsibility of the School Court, in which educators and students are equally represented.

Groups of students

Students of the same grade of the same Republican school are divided into groups of sixty children of the same gender. Each group has a commander and a deputy commander, who are elected in elections where half of the votes are cast by educators and half by children. Six groups form a battalion, and all battalions of one school form a legion, which camps every year in the district capital and demonstrates the military skills it has learned.

Lists

Every month, lists of the best and worst students in the Study and Behavior categories are published on the Republican School notice board.

Holiday

The holiday of Republican schools is Ursioz 23, the day of the Owl.

Controversies

Many aspects of the Republican School are the subject of controversy both in Guntreland (not only among royalists but also among Masdenites) and abroad: from the separation of children from their parents, which is often judged as cruel and unnatural; giving the State and not the parents a decisive role not only in education but also in the moral upbringing of children; through bans on physical punishment of children, which many interpret as naive idealism and pandering to children who "can't even understand" a different punishment; to the political indoctrination of children into the political values of the majority in the National Assembly, and especially the personality of the Commander of the Department of Education, the current Commander being a staunch member of the Hensherite Club.
