Sarge was a soldier during the Iraqi war, but was discharged due to his inhumane nature. Afterwards he used his skill to become a mercenary, specifying in killing mages. He's been hired by various people including members of the Mages Association.

While Sarge was working as a mercenary, one of his kills included Maximus's mother.
Mental Trauma
Due to his daughter dying during 9/11, Sarge devoted himself to the military. He often will laser focus on whatever task he's doing, completely leaving any morals behind. His trauma for his daughter is so great that he projected all of his pent up feelings on Maria's dead body.

Despite Sarge's actions he constantly views himself as a hero & will do anything as long as he views himself in the right. Such as killing surrendering enemies, becoming a mercenary because he was discharged, killing mages because of their inhumane acts, & killing his own servants to protect somebody he views as his daughter.
