Tiefling

Tieflings are a plane-touched race descended from humans. Tieflings have fiendish origins, created either by the pairing of a human and a fiend, or the curse of a bloodline (usually due to a warlock's bargain. Most tieflings look relatively similar to humans, though have more skin tones - such as red and blue. Additionally, many tieflings have overt fiendish features, such as horns, antlers, tails, forked tongues, glowing eyes, fangs, goat legs, hooves, or even wings. Due to their fiendish heritage and appearance, tieflings are often discriminated against by other races. Many believe that tieflings were innately evil, conspiring with fiends to destroy everything good. This is a false view, as tieflings are - like other humanoids - not innately predisposed to any particular alignment.

Historically, there have been a variety of different tiefling types. They were descended from devils, demons, unaligned fiends, and even some evil deities. However, shortly after the Spellplague, the newly-ascended god Asmodeus conducted a ritual whereupon every last tiefling on Toril was marked with his blood, unifying all tiefling bloodlines into one. Although other bloodlines emerged over time - particulary amongst devils - Asmodeus tieflings remain the most common by far.

Due to the discrimination they face, some tieflings choose to embrace their infernal heritage and become warlocks - particularly making pacts with fiends. Non-tieflings often cite these instances as justification for their discrimination, though it is only a small minority of tieflings that choose to do this. Some tieflings instead choose to use their natural charisma to become bards, fighting back against the discrimination they face though song and art.
