The Great Forest, also known as the Realm of Spirits, is an parallel plane of existence that coincides with the Changing Realm, which is inhabited by humans. It is the home of the Dium, supernatural entities that manifest as the aspects of the universe, life, and nature. Humans cannot traditionally enter this place, often only visiting with the permission of Dium companions through ritual Astral projection. However, this practice is highly dangerous and can lead to the death of those involved.

Geography

The Great Forest is endless and eternal. It is a vast, ethereal realm that expands in all directions in an almost frozen labyrinth. The geography of the Great Forest varies much like it does in the Mortal Realm. However, unlike the Mortal Realm, its geography is created without rhyme nor reason. Deep gorges and valleys are formed from the roots of mighty trees, great mountains and peaks may stand alone over vast meadows and fields of multicolored grasses. Rivers may form without beginning nor end, and lakes may form without source or reason.

Ecosystem

Within the Great Forest exists trees that have no known origin and are incomparable to any tree from the Mortal Realm. They are vast, towering like wooden mountains whose canopies block the sky without heeding sunlight. These trees form dense and endless groves, their roots forming gnarled rills and gorges in the landscape. Around them, unique and varied flowers, brambles, and other flora exists that shimmer like rainbows and sparkle with colorful dews. There is no earth or soil beneath the feet, but rather an expansive webwork of roots which span in thickness from a few inches to tens of feet.

Fauna & Flora

The Great Forest exudes with an essence of timelessness. Its air is serene and calm. All things within this space are as they are and should always be. Disruptions, even minor, are often corrected immediately. If a left is broken from its branch, it will shrivel, wither, then die while a new leaf is replaced just as quickly.   However, these disruptions also do not go unnoticed. Within the Great Forest, spirits hunt like beasts. These disturbances luring them to the source in great packs. They are protectors of this place, and often see these disturbances as offenses to their rule.   Much like how humans have divided their Mortal Realm into kingdoms and nation-states, the Great Forest too has its divisions, but are much less obvious to the human eye yet appear quite clear to the Great Dium who inhabit this plane of existence. The Dium within the Great Forest follow a confusing, nonsensicial, and misleading hierarchy which has no basis in human understanding. Those who rule over swaths of the Great Forest seem neither strong, powerful, or brutal yet hold sway over vast amounts of land, flora, and other Dium with little explanation. These swaths are deemed "their lands" and any disruption no matter how minor, is viewed as an offense to their rule, a mockery of their order, and an insult to the natural way of the Great Forest.   Humans who visit this realm, even through astroprojection, are at risk of harm or death. Their death here can cause great change. If pure of heart, their soul may infuse with the Great Forest healthy bloom, an eruption of life, and new extraordinary life that may even cause some changes to the Mortal Realm counterpart. However, if one is deemed an unjust or unrighteous person, the energy of their soul may cause horrific changes. Where life once prospered, it may wither and die. The roots poisoned, the flowers crumbling, and any Dium nearby may undergo a hostile and blood-thirsty transformation. If powerful enough, areas within the Mortal Realm may see drought, plants may die suddenly, or the air becomes unnaturally still.
