The Darenites

  The Darenites are the people of the island of Daren, who have been completely isolated since the Renewal - and perhaps before. Daren is encircled by a large, impassable wall and four gates locked by mysterious mechanisms.   Due to being cut off completely from the outside world, the control of resources and population is very important. Darenites have a law preventing them from having more than two children, and births and deaths are meticulously recorded. This is the job of a group of people known as minders, who keep track of genealogies and make sure relationships are not entered into within four degrees of genetic separation. The minders must approve every match.
