Nguntakki

Cave settlement

This article is a stub. Please comment if you would like it to become a priority for expansion.

Located on the island of Skae, Nguntakki holds the title of the largest and most permanent Skaesh settlement. It is situated about a mile from the coast, though during the depths of winter it can be a fifty mile journey to the edge of the sea ice. The settlement itself is contained in a massive cave chamber. The entrance to the cave is rather narrow, and almost invisible from the outside; it protects the settlement from the worst of the weather. At the back of the cave is a deep, wide pool of fresh water that rarely freezes. This pool leads to various flooded tunnels that have never been explored.
Whereas most Skaesh settlements are home to three or four families, Nguntakki is the permanent home of at least twenty, even during the quieter period of the year. In the winter, this number swells to around fifty families. Each family maintains a shelter made of whale bones, animal skins, and sea bird feathers, and many are left untouched for most of the year; however, if critical repairs are required, these are taken care of by the community.
Fires are always contained to the west side of the cave, where natural chimneys provide ventilation. These are marked from the outside with the ribs of whales, and are manually kept clear most of the year. During bad weather, they are shielded with magic so that snow and ice does not block the holes.

The most striking feature of Nguntakki is the lights hanging from the cave ceiling, illuminating the settlement in a soft glow. They are made from bird skulls imbued with magic. A magic user has to refresh the skull's energy every year, or the light begins to dim and lose potency.

It sounds like an interesting place that demands a lot of resilience from its inhabitants. It would be very interesting to know how they feed themselves, and I imagine the birds must have a special significance if their skulls are used as lights on the ceilings.
